The position is responsible for planning, design, and upkeep of the university landscape and hardscape. The position is also responsible for the supervision of the day-to-day operational activities of the grounds maintenance staff, including sports turf management, litter control and abatement and snow removal
Spends the majority of the time (50% or more) achieving organizational objectives through the coordinated achievements of subordinate staff. Manages experienced professionals who exercise latitude and independence in assignments. Establishes departmental goals and objectives, and functions with autonomy. Manages the accountability and stewardship of human, financial, and often physical resources in compliance with departmental and campus-wide goals and objectives. Ensures subordinate supervisors and professionals adhere to defined internal controls with a focus on policy and strategy implementation. Manages systems and procedures to protect departmental assets and requires practical knowledge in leading and managing the execution of processes, projects, and tactics within one area.
Plan and schedule work in accordance with seasonal needs, the University calendar, and current weather conditions to ensure that established standards for appearance, plant health, cleanliness, and public safety are attained daily. Maintain premium sports field surfaces by implementing best practices in mowing, fertilization, pest management, aeration, moisture management, top dressing and more. Oversight and maintenance of all sports turf fields under the Bronco Athletics Department’s management. Oversight, maintenance, management, and planning of all landscape features on Athletic Department grounds including trees, shrubbery, flower beds, and artificial and natural grass surfaces. Develop policies and standards for landscape maintenance on campus within campus policies and procedures. Hire, train, appraise, and motivate an appropriate workforce to meet varying seasonal needs. Optimize the utilization of permanent staff, temporary staff, and outside contractors to meet department goals. Inspect assigned work to ensure that standards for work quality, established operating procedures, productivity, and safety practices are being satisfactorily maintained. Stay abreast of any governmental rules and regulations that apply to landscaping activities and ensure that strict compliance is maintained. Purchase and maintain equipment, tools, and supplies to ensure that landscaping staff has the resources available to maximize their productivity. Assist with game day and event operation setup and tear down for both internal and external groups. Ability to work nights and weekends as needed. Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience in planning and developing, prioritizing, and managing the variety of activities included in a comprehensive landscaping program. Ability to recruit, hire, direct and motivate a diverse staff of landscaping personnel. Extensive technical knowledge and understanding of grounds management and horticulture practices related to Southwest Idaho (high desert) area. This includes knowledge of all applicable governmental regulations. Effective communication skills, both oral and written. Experience leading a large team of individuals conducting labor-intensive work. Idaho Pesticide Applicator’s license. Knowledge of maintenance and grooming required of clay softball/baseball infields.
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent including 2 years of professional relevant experience
Bachelor’s degree in Science, Turf Grass Science, Biology, or a related field Five (5) years experience as a sports turf manager managing multiple NCAA-caliber fields across multiple sports. Two (2) years of management/supervisory experience with the ability to build and lead a team.
