The goal of the Counseling Center is to provide students with professional counseling services and outreach to help them cope with issues that may impede successful academic performance. The Counseling Center also offers crisis intervention and psychological/ psychiatric assessment as well as consultation with others who have concerns about the mental/ emotional state of NC State students. Our services are primarily short term in nature and we make referrals to other helping professionals and community agencies as appropriate. North Carolina State University competes as an NCAA Division I team in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Sports Medicine Department is responsible for the preventative care, monitoring, and restoration of student-athlete overall health.
The embedded position is charged with the coordination of comprehensive mental health care for NC State student-athletes through triage, evaluation, treatment planning, consultation, and referral procedures to support access to care, wrap-around services, and consistent communication in an integrated care model. This individual will develop relationships within the athletic department, university, and community to effectively support student-athletes. The licensed provider will also carry a clinical caseload. This individual will work within an integrated healthcare model as part of the Sports Medicine staff. The embedded counselor must operate in a highly ethical manner and maintain confidential record-keeping systems in keeping with North Carolina State Law governing the delivery of psychological servicesThis position will provide professional individual and group counseling services and outreach to NC State students as well as consultation to University administrators, staff and others who have concerns about the mental/emotional status of NC State students. The staff member will beembedded within Athletics and ASPSA to primarily serve students who are connected to those units, They will consult and build relationships with athletics staff, collaborate with other mental health professionals embedded in these areas, and gain an understanding of the unique needs of the population served.This position will assist in all areas of Counseling Center functioning including: Provide individual and group counseling of NC State students/clients (personal, academic, and vocational assessment and counseling); psychological assessment; developmental and crisis counseling; couples counseling; evaluation of students for withdrawal from the University. Develop and participate in outreach programming, hold lets talk drop in spaces. Consult with faculty staff, parents, and others. Provide evaluations and recommendations regarding students with academic and conduct problems. Participate in after hours “on call” and possible evening office hours. General administrative responsibilities. Assist with facilitation/coordination of mental health screenings. Triage of urgent students referrals to determine level of care and disposition. Conduct risk assessment and provide emergency crisis services as necessary; makes immediate clinical assessments and provide intervention. Provide wrap-around case management support to student-athletes and related coordination of care services for the Mental Health and Performance Psychology team Coordinate and monitor services related to care plans and behavioral MOU’s/ acknowledgements. Assess and evaluate effectiveness of care plan and progress made by student working with outside providers, participate in patient treatment planning and case review with patient care providers. Manage documents and coordinate collaboration for multidisciplinary teams for student athlete wellbeing, which may include the eating disorder team, performance teams, critical incident response team, and others as needed. Assist in coordination of care for student psychiatric hospitalizations, including pre- hospitalization and post-discharge care coordination and campus partner communication. Assist in coordination of care for higher levels of care, to include residential, PHP, and IOP treatment programs, including pre-treatment and post-discharge care coordination and campus partner communication. Coordination of clinical documentation in electronic medical records. Facilitate referrals to higher levels of care and referral coordination with on- and off-campus mental health partners, including ongoing maintenance of referral lists. Coordinate referrals between university, community, state, regional and nationwide service providers. Build relationships with student-athletes, coaches, and staff that foster open communication, early intervention, and risk management. Develop relationships and partnerships with Athletic Department Units, such as Sports Medicine, Academic Support Services for Student-Athletes, Student-Athlete Development, Strength and Conditioning, etc.
Qualifications
Master’s degree required and a doctorate preferred in psychology,counseling, or clinical social work or closely-related field. Appropriatelicensure must be obtained/maintained according to NC laws.
Established commitment to culturally informed and responsive services Strong clinical skills Experience in handling crisis situations
Experience working in a college/university counseling center Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively within a large mental health services agency Previous work with electronic records and scheduling, preferably Titanium Experience in risk assessment Ability to provide clinical supervision
Must meet all state law requirements for licensure in mental healthdiscipline
