Reporting to the Director of Athletics and Head Football Coach, the Assistant Coach- Defensive Coordinator is responsible for performing assistant coaching duties and assisting the Head Coach in the management and administration of the football program in adherence to the policies, rules and regulations of California Lutheran University,
NCAA
and
SCIAC
. The position will also assist with game management functions for numerous intercollegiate sporting events on campus and will serve as on-site liaison/host.
The Defensive Coordinator is responsible for executing all aspects of the Defensive phase of the intercollegiate football program, including: playbook development and implementation, staff development, practice and game planning, coaching and overseeing all defensive position groups, film study and breakdown, Hudl and Zoom competencies, and meeting management. Serves as assistant coach; assists in coaching during athletic events; coaches all scheduled practice and workout sessions; assists in the development of practice and game plans; coaches team members, individually and in groups; demonstrates game techniques; performs film review, analysis and exchange; coordinates Special Teams; coaches a defensive position; performs other assistant coaching duties as assigned. Recruits academically and athletically qualified student-athletes to meet the University’s admission standards and enrollment goals. E
Assists in the implementation of the academic program including monitoring of individual student-athlete progress to ensure academic eligibility. E
Serves as a designated game manager and on-site host/liaison to include (but is not limited to) duties such as: opening/securing visiting locker rooms; working with game officials; set-up; crowd control; greeting participating teams coaches, and officials; scheduling, supporting, and attending pre-championship meetings; volunteer coordination; facility scheduling and maintenance; general troubleshooting during the championship events; supports game management duties as needed. Assist in California Lutheran University’s numerous sports camps, including (but not limited to): tracking payments; scheduling events and arrangements; coordinating marketing efforts to promote summer camps. E
Promotes the athletic program and specific sports through community events, public speaking, fundraising, and marketing; demonstrates community involvement through active leadership and engagement to include: participation in team-based community service projects; encouragement of student-athlete participation in mentoring; and participation in other service programs. E
Provides general counsel, guidance, and inspiration to students regarding their overall success; promotes good sportsmanship. E
Operates a vehicle to conduct work as needed. E

The care and prevention of athletic injuries, basic sports injury first aid and emergency procedures.
Principles of sports leadership and training.
Film analysis techniques; video editing techniques for
HUDL
film exchange.
Plan, organize and conduct all practices for the defense, including daily on-field coaching and management of practices and games.
Organize game preparation, including film breakdown; develop game plans and scouting reports related to the defensive unit for each contest.
Develop an annual defensive playbook and teaching progression.
Supervise and evaluate all defensive assistant coaches.
Schedule and manage film sessions and meetings for all defensive positions.
Recruit prospective student athletes.
Demonstrate leadership, sportsmanship and conduct becoming to all college and professional sport guidelines.
Monitor and support academic progress of student athletes.
Assist with the mentoring of student athletes.
Supervise student work-study.
Assist with Special Teams.
Ability to work flexible hours with frequent evenings and weekends is required.
Operate a vehicle to travel and conduct work.
Any combination equivalent to: bachelor’s degree in exercise science, kinesiology, sports management, or related field and two years of coaching and recruiting experience in the sport of football at the collegiate level.
Master’s preferred.
Previous college or professional coaching/ defensive coordinating preferred.
Successful collegiate recruiting experience.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Strong, detail-oriented, organizational skills.
Computer literacy and adaptability in all Microsoft, Hudl, Recruiting and
NCAA
software.
A strong knowledge and experience working with student athletes, teams and programs.
A self-motivated leader/worker.
Ability and interest in sports and willingness to work with college students.
Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with employees, staff, student athletes and alumni.
Ability to manage and supervise staff including training scheduling and evaluating.
Ability to teach and speak effectively, present information 1-on-1 and in a group setting.
Valid California driver’s license.
Ability to obtain a Class B endorsed
CDL
License, insurance coverage (if driving own vehicle) or be insurable.
Possession of or ability to obtain
CPR
(cardiopulmonary resuscitation),
AED
(automated external defibrillator) and First Aid certifications within 90 days of employment.
Ability to communicate (verbally and in writing) and hear to exchange information; ability to walk, run, jump, stretch, stand, sit, bend, twist, use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl; lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; climb stairs, ropes or ladders; specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus and peripheral vision; ability to demonstrate proper techniques and skills needed for athletic participation; ability to operate a vehicle to travel to various sites to conduct work; ability to maintain level of physical fitness to meet departmental standards.
Working environment includes both indoors and outdoors; exposure to various weather conditions, including temperature extremes; Indoor work environment may not be air conditioned during hot weather; subject to vehicle operation to conduct work; travel is required; frequent weekend and evening hours is required.
