and women’s cross-country and women’s track & field programs. The Head Coach will be responsible for
recruitment, retention, and skill training as it relates to developing successful NCAA Division II CrossCountry/Track & Field programs. The Head Coach assumes responsibility for ensuring the teams’

compliance with NCAA and CIAA rules and regulations and with Shaw University’s policies & procedures, and
budgetary constraints. The Head Coach will actively participate in institutional and athletic fundraising
endeavors and committee service as assigned. The position is accountable for ensuring effective personal
management of subordinate personnel, collaboration with all campus constituents, and maintain a student
focus environment that will provide a positive student-athlete experience. 

Essential Job Functions:

• Administration of all phases of the cross country and track and field programs.
• Serves as an effective instructor to develop the physical skills of student athletes in the sports of track &
field and cross country. Teaches fundamentals skills in track & field during practice sessions, training
athletes to be physically fit to compete. Critiques and provides feedback on student athletes’ strengths
and weaknesses as related to athletic ability.
• Serves as an effective coach in the development of successful strategies for competition and the
reinforcement of student athletes’ character development, personal motivation and leadership. Monitors
nutrition of student athletes.
• Ensures effective recruitment of student athletes for the Track and Field/Cross Country teams, which
may include international recruiting.
• Adheres to all institutional, applicable conference and all other rules, regulations and policies.
• Assists in fundraising with major fund raisers in the Athletic Department, in consultation with the Office of
Institutional Advancement and the Athletic Director.
• Implements effective strategies to retain students athletically and academically. Monitors and supports
the academic success of the student-athletes.
• Acts as a liaison to help coordinate community service involvement.
• Effectively prepares and manages the teams’ budgets and follow the policies set forth by the office of
Finance and Administration.

Education and/or Experience

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher learning or a related discipline required; Master’s preferred and/or equivalent combination of training and experience.
• A minimum of one year cross-country/track & field coaching experience at the high school or collegiate level.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively teach fundamentals and strategies of track & field during practice sessions.

  • Cross-Country/Track & Field statistical knowledge

Must have valid driver’s license with the ability to pass a Motor Vehicle Records check. Must be able to read, write and speak fluently in English.

Physical Demands

The work environment is an athletic and office setting which requires the ability to travel much of the time,
work long hours including evenings and weekends, be physically active, able to lift up to 50 pounds, work
outdoors in various weather conditions, and have the ability to demonstrate specific skills.
