The Grounds Turf Manager at the University of Oklahoma plays a pivotal role overseeing the day-to-day operations, agronomic programming, and maintenance of athletic properties, with a specific focus on the state-of-the-art Loves Field softball facility and Marita Hines softball facilities. This position requires effective management of all games and collaboration with the Operations Coordinator to make strategic decisions that align with facility needs, schedule, camps, and weather conditions. Key responsibilities include supervising the field maintenance staff for Softball facilities and ensuring the seamless execution of daily tasks while prioritizing safety protocols. The Grounds Turf Manager will actively communicate with operations and coaching personnel to establish and adjust field maintenance schedules. Additionally, the role involves promptly recognizing and reporting any problems or changes in fields or equipment. As a liaison with marketing, the Grounds Turf Manager will execute fieldwork in accordance with promotions both before and after events. Attendance at softball operations meetings will be crucial for staying informed and providing valuable input on field conditions, weather scenarios, and practice schedules. This position also encompasses the essential task of preparing, laying out, and painting all field markings and decorations in strict accordance with the current NCAA and Big 12, and future SEC rules. The Grounds Turf Manager plays a vital role in maintaining the standards and regulations set forth by collegiate athletics, contributing to the overall success of the softball program at the University of Oklahoma.  

Essential Functions:

• Mowing: Use of large reel and rotary type mowers to maintain the outfield and the areas surrounding the New Loves Field facility and the old Marita Hynes softball facility
• Dirt Work: Managing and maintaining the infield dirt (Dura Edge Pro) at a championship level, getting playing field painted and chalked for all game and practices, tarping the infield for rain events and untarping
• Cultural Practices: Watering, topdressing, aerifications, verticutting, and fertility programs
• Trimming and Edging: Playing fields, sidewalks, fences and borders, windscreens, and managing artificial turf
• Helping other facilities when needed, managing, and maintaining equipment fleet
• Other duties as assigned by Director of Athletics Fields Grounds  

Job Requirements

Required Education: None

Required Experience: 

• 6 months landscape and grounds experience

Skills:

• Basic math skills
• Ability to accurately read and understand written materials and instructions
• Uses tools or equipment in a manner requiring competence
• Communicates as required to exchange information and give simple instructions
• Performs simple record-keeping operations
• Knowledge of routine grounds maintenance procedures

Certifications: 

• Valid Oklahoma Driver's License in order to drive University vehicles or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire date.

Advertised Physical/Environmental Requirements:

• Demonstrated ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions
• Demonstrated ability to meet the physical demands of the job including lifting 50lbs and loading to the height of a truck bed
• Walking unassisted and uninterrupted
• Near continuous standing
• Demonstrated ability to work overtime, sometimes on short notice
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions including in the heat and cold
• Some overtime, including nights, weekends, and holidays may be required  
• May be designated as an essential position during emergency closures
• May be required to remain on campus overnight during weather or other emergencies

Supervision:

• 1-4 part-time employees

Departmental Preferences:

• High School Diploma or equivalent and minimum of 3 years of experience in field maintenance/management
• Minor League Baseball and/or NCAA Division 1 baseball or softball team
• Associate degree in Sports Turfgrass Management
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in field maintenance/management with a Minor League Baseball and/or NCAA Division 1 baseball or softball team
