BASIC FUNCTION
To serve as the Head Basketball Coach. The head coach will be in charge of all aspects of the Men’s Basketball program, including recruitment of quality student athletes, retention, fundraising, conditioning programs, organizing and planning practices and game strategies, and assisting in scheduling contests and coordinating travel.

BASIC FUNCTION
To serve as the Head Basketball Coach. The head coach will be in charge of all aspects of the Men’s Basketball program, including recruitment of quality student athletes, retention, fundraising, conditioning programs, organizing and planning practices and game strategies, and assisting in scheduling contests and coordinating travel.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Contribute to the educational mission of the University by coordinating the instruction of student athletes in the area of Men’s Basketball.
Recruit quality student-athletes for the Men’s Basketball program;
Instruct methods, strategies, and coach student-athletes in the sport.
Schedule practices and competitions.
Assist with coordinating travel (ex: bus/van, hotel, meals, etc.).
Transport and supervise student-athletes while on the road.
Train and supervise assistant coaches.
Participate in fundraising activities to supplement the operational budget for the program.
Monitor specific sport budget to ensure fiscal responsibility.
Operate the program under the rules and regulations of the University, the NCAA, and the NAC.
This position will be responsible for monitoring academic performance of student athletes. This includes overseeing of class attendance, grades, class performance and study habits to encourage the attainment of a degree and maintain athletics eligibility.
The head coach will be responsible for initializing and supervising community service projects in coordination with the athletic department, organize and implement the Intramural program and assist with game management duties.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
The Director of Athletics provides general supervision.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor of Science or equivalent experience in physical education, or related/appropriate discipline. Minimum of three years coaching at the collegiate level. Must be available to travel, have a valid driver’s license, be able to drive for the purpose of university business, and be able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays when necessary.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS** :**
Prior Men’s Basketball Head Coaching experience. We are looking for a highly motivated, organized individual with strong interpersonal skills and with knowledge of coaching, teaching, and recruiting techniques.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge:
Comprehensive knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.
Ability to deal effectively with students, college personnel, as well as professional NCAA compliance network and others outside of the university.
Understanding of the educational goals and objectives of Vermont State University including attention to accessibility and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Understanding of the psychological and cultural characteristics of economically and educationally disadvantaged students, particularly in a rural setting.
Awareness of developmental, holistic, and proactive approaches to student success.
Skills:
Strong and varied technical skills and interest in recreational activities.
Broad base of knowledge and skills related to athletic facilities, management, coaching, recruiting and other relevant experience.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Experience with (or ability to learn) technologies such as SSE, Colleague, Self-Service, Slate, Microsoft products, and Perceptive Content.
Proven record of accountability and follow-through with the ability to meet deadlines.
Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
Abilities:
Demonstrated ability to positively influence student skill development, such as communication skills, leadership skills, academic skills, technical skills, non-cognitive or ‘soft’ skills, and social skills.
Demonstrated ability to foster student development in the attainment of student success goals, such as academic purpose, sense of belonging/identity, agency, career readiness, civic readiness, access & equity.
Demonstrated positive attitude regarding Vermont State University and a desire to improve student outcomes, including attention to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Demonstrated ability to support a diverse community and promote diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.
Ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals within the University and capacity to work as part of a team to collaborate and choose student success.
Ability to collaborate effectively with college personnel as well as external stakeholders in carrying out the various coordination, liaison, and other aspects of the job.
Ability to work weekends and evenings.
LOCATION
The home campus for this position is VTSU Johnson.
BUDGETED COMPENSATION
The budgeted compensation for this position is $45,000 to $50,000.
