Under the direction of the Director of Recreation and Competitive Sports, the esports's Coordinator & Head Coach will be responsible for the developing, launching, recruitment, selection, and management of all aspects of the team/games in conjunction with the team captains and organization’s executive board. The preferred candidate will have the ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends. Travel for team tournaments and recruiting will be required.
The Coordinator and Head Coach is required to be present during all practices, games, and competitions, ensuring all guidelines are followed in accordance with NACE governing rules.
Attend required league meetings.
Work with the Team President to devise a competition schedule each year and strategize on game and tournament selection.
Attend Away Competitions and post-season in-person tournaments that may require multiple overnight stays.
Make appropriate decisions regarding the safety and playing ability of team members.
Collaborate with other on-campus departments to run practices, competitions, and team building activities.
In coordination with the esports eBoard, oversee and manage program budget and make appropriate decisions regarding the safety and playing ability of team members.
Provide guidance and input on games selected for competitions.
Offer regular feedback on equipment upgrades, updates, and maintenance.
In coordination with the eBoard and Director of Recreation and Competitive Sports, organize team travel when required.
Ensure all team members are in good academic standing, have completed and filed the appropriate paperwork with Student Programs & Engagement and Athletics (Anti-Hazing Form, Travel Forms, Liability Waivers, etc.).
Be available to team members to counsel on matters relating to esports, and team morale.
Represent Bentley University in a manner that is consistent with the mission of the University.
Meet as needed with the appropriate Athletic Department Administrative staff on things pertaining to esports.
Assist with recruitment and awareness efforts with regards to esports as needed. This includes, but is not limited to, information sessions, university events, community outreach, and related support throughout the season/offseason.
Other Duties
Management of student participants by reinforcing commitment to academic standards while participating in an extracurricular team.
Manage the balance of individual team needs and time away from campus for practices and competitions.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma, Bachelor’s Degree Preferred.
Minimum 1-3 years competitive esports experience involving team-based multiplayer online video games.
Expert knowledge of the Discord communication platform as well as multiple games including some combination of League of Legends, Valorant, and Rocket League at the minimum. Additional knowledge in other games such as Overwatch, Call of Duty, CS:GO, etc. is preferred but not required.
Coaching or teaching experience preferred.
Experience recruiting high school or college students preferred.
Proven ability to work effectively with diverse groups. Excellent interpersonal, communication, analytical, and decision-making skills.
Demonstrated leadership and coaching abilities with a commitment to developing and maintaining a positive and productive playing environment.
Strong relationship-building skills.
Proficient written and oral communication skills.
Must hold and maintain a valid, unrestricted United States driver’s license, with an insurable driving history as determined by Bentley’s insurance carrier.
Work Environment
The esports's Coordinator and Head Coach should be present at all practices and matches of esports, which can occur in afternoons and evening weekdays, and weekends.
Work approximately 10 hours per week (more time allocated for travel to and from away games/competitions as needed) between the months of late August to May. Please note that some competitions and practices may occur in the summer months.
Travel for in-person practices and competitions is required. This may include weekend tournaments and travel to out-of-town competitions.
The Coach must work collaboratively with the e-board members.
Must work within the space and scheduling limitations of the Bentley campus/athletics and be flexible if changes to the schedule occur.
Be present at all practices and games and must effectively demonstrate and instruct techniques and skill to team members.
