Salem College is located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, a vibrant college town known as the “City of Arts and Innovation”. Winston-Salem is a lively academic community, home to six institutions of higher education and more than 26,000 students. Winston Salem has a collaborative and engaged academic community with strong private and public schools, excellent healthcare systems, and affordable housing. The Winston-Salem area also offers a rich variety of cultural opportunities and has a vibrant art and restaurant scene. Within a few hours of campus are mountains for skiing, camping, or hiking; rivers for whitewater rafting; and the beautiful ports and beaches of North and South Carolina.
The Cheer Team at Salem College is a club sport which is part of athletics. The role of the Cheerleading Coach is to teach the cheerleading squad to promote school spirit and to encourage athletic teams. Salem College sees the role of the Cheerleading Coach as being someone who has a high level of knowledge in coaching the sport of cheerleading, can develop/choreograph cheers and cheer dances, teach cheers, dances, and technique to cheer team members, and serve as a role model to Salem students. Ideally it will be someone who can coach our students in a non-competitive style and help them keep a balance in all aspects of their lives, academically, socially, mentally and physically. Currently this team is not a team that performs stunts.
A cheerleader promotes school spirit, school pride, and encourages the members of the athletic teams. Their involvement and enthusiasm in the Salem community helps other students feel a part of the community. Promoting positive teamwork, positive interactions amongst teammates (and all levels of the program), modeling sportsmanship and fan involvement at games and pep assemblies are viewed as important aspects of being a cheerleader.
The Head Cheerleading Coach reports directly to the Director of Athletics. This position requires the coach to have CPR/First Aid certification and all other certifications required by the USA South, if applicable.
While performing the responsibilities of the Head Cheerleading Coach, the employee is required to sit and stand for varying lengths of time; lead exercises, bend, reach, lift, push, and pull up to 25 pounds; occasionally walk, and kneel and regularly ascend/descend stairs; use hands and fingers to handle or feel and may manipulate keys on a keyboard; view a computer monitor; perceive sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction, and receive detailed information through oral communication; express and exchange ideas by means of spoken word; and work in various settings including, gym, office and outdoor settings. May be exposed to rain or outside conditions unexpectedly.
