Salem College is located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, a vibrant college town known as the “City of Arts and Innovation”. Position Summary:
The Cheer Team at Salem College is a club sport which is part of athletics. The role of the Cheerleading Coach is to teach the cheerleading squad to promote school spirit and to encourage athletic teams. Salem College sees the role of the Cheerleading Coach as being someone who has a high level of knowledge in coaching the sport of cheerleading, can develop/choreograph cheers and cheer dances, teach cheers, dances, and technique to cheer team members, and serve as a role model to Salem students. Ideally it will be someone who can coach our students in a non-competitive style and help them keep a balance in all aspects of their lives, academically, socially, mentally and physically. Currently this team is not a team that performs stunts.
A cheerleader promotes school spirit, school pride, and encourages the members of the athletic teams. Their involvement and enthusiasm in the Salem community helps other students feel a part of the community. Promoting positive teamwork, positive interactions amongst teammates (and all levels of the program), modeling sportsmanship and fan involvement at games and pep assemblies are viewed as important aspects of being a cheerleader.
The Head Cheerleading Coach reports directly to the Director of Athletics. This position requires the coach to have CPR/First Aid certification and all other certifications required by the USA South, if applicable.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Specific Duties of the Head Cheerleading Coach include but are not limited to:
- Organize and run effective warm up, practices and games.
- Organize tryouts, practices, and participation at games
- Assesses skills and assigns team positions.
- Maintains a regular practice schedule and organizes practice time to provide both individual and team development.
- Create, clean, and/or teach routines.
- Coaches and instructs cheerleaders, individually or in groups, regarding the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport.
- Observes cheerleaders, during events and practice, to determine the needs for individual or team improvement.
- Follows established procedures in the event of an injury.
- Conferences with the Athletic Director or other campus officials, as necessary, regarding the performance of and/or disciplinary actions taken with students.
- Models positive sports-like behavior and maintains appropriate conduct towards cheerleaders, officials, and spectators.
- Organize eligibility forms, emergency data cards, insurance records, equipment inventory, and other related records as provided by the Athletic Director.
- Maintain cheerleading budget.
- Distribute monthly calendar to cheerleaders.
- Maintain daily attendance for cheerleaders.
- Be aware of cheerleaders school attendance and grades.
- Encourage cheerleaders to participate in other campus events and service projects.
- Help plan and facilitate group and morale-building activities for the team.
- Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Athletic Director or other appropriate administrators.
Summer:
- Prepare materials for practice and organize the upcoming season.
August:
- Hold interest meeting and try-outs (if necessary) to determine the team.
- Coordinate with the Athletic Director regarding uniform and practice gear needs and before making any purchases.
- Schedule a date for uniform fitting.
- Prepare materials for practice and organize the upcoming season.
- Determine the practice schedule based upon class schedule of team members.
- During practice, teach the material that will be used during the following season.
Fall Season:
- Attend soccer games (home) to supervise the cheerleaders.
- Attend at least one home volleyball and one home swimming event to promote school spirit and to supervise the cheerleaders.
- Attend selected team playoff games, if applicable.
- Prepare materials for practice and organize the upcoming season.
- Determine the practice schedule.
- During practice, teach the material that will be used during the following season.
Winter Season:
- Attend basketball games (home) to supervise cheerleaders.
- Attend at least one home tennis and one home softball event to promote school spirit and supervise the cheerleaders.
- Prepare materials for practice and organize the upcoming season.
- Determine the practice schedule.
- During practice, teach the material that will be used during the following season.
End Of The Year:
- Attend and supervise the cheerleaders at the Journey to Salem event (if applicable).
- Attend and supervise the cheerleaders performing a cheer and/or dance routine at the athletic banquet.
- Present cheerleaders with awards at the athletic banquet.
- Collect and inventory cheer uniforms.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree and 4 to 5 years of related experience.
Physical Functions:
While performing the responsibilities of the Head Cheerleading Coach, the employee is required to sit and stand for varying lengths of time; lead exercises, bend, reach, lift, push, and pull up to 25 pounds; occasionally walk, and kneel and regularly ascend/descend stairs; use hands and fingers to handle or feel and may manipulate keys on a keyboard; view a computer monitor; perceive sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction, and receive detailed information through oral communication; express and exchange ideas by means of spoken word; and work in various settings including, gym, office and outdoor settings. May be exposed to rain or outside conditions unexpectedly.
