Founded in in 1923 and located in Beaumont, TX, Lamar University (LU) is home to more than 18,000 students and is among the fastest growing Texas colleges and universities. LU is a member of The Texas State University System, which is the first higher education system of Texas and maintains the lowest average tuition and fees of any university system in Texas. As a member of the Southland Conference, LU sponsors 17 varsity sports at the NCAA Division I level. Cardinal teams have a history of winning championships in sports including men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, women’s soccer, golf, tennis, track and field and cross country. The baseball program has been nationally recognized for decades and has produced multiple major leaguers and has had players drafted each of the past three seasons. LU’s football program heightens excitement on campus with conference-leading crowds and students involved in the marching band, cheerleading, dance team, and all the fun of game-day tailgating to go along with a team that is on the rise. Lamar has improved its win total in football each of the past three seasons and advanced to the NCAA Championships in 2025 for just the second time in school history. The Lamar volleyball, and softball programs are also on the rise. Lamar University is experiencing its best run of success in school history winning the past two Southland Conference Commissioner’s Cups. Over the course of the past three seasons, LU has brought home two Commissioner’s Cups, two men’s all-sports trophies and a women’s all-sports trophy.

Position Overview
Reporting directly to the Director of Athletics, the Head Men’s Basketball Coach is primarily responsible for the overall operation and success of the LU men’s basketball program, including developing a vision and providing principled leadership that promotes the health and well-being of student-athletes, competitive success, positive attitudes, successful outcomes, strong working relationships, a positive work environment, and a positive student-athlete experience.

Essential Job Functions

  • Recruit and assess appropriate student-athletes with excellent academic backgrounds to a NCAA Division I FCS institution.
  • Manage scholarship allocation to recruit and enroll the ideal student-athletes to the program.
  • Oversee player development.
  • Possess knowledge of and abide by NCAA and Southland Conference rules and regulations.
  • Conduct meetings with assistant coaches and distribute practice area assignments.
