Overview

The Head Men’s Ice Hockey Coach provides strategic leadership for all aspects of a Division I hockey program, including planning and conducting practices, developing competitive game strategies, and maximizing student-athlete performance. The head coach is responsible for recruiting, developing, and mentoring high-character student-athletes who excel both on the ice and academically, while cultivating a values-driven team culture. The Head Coach leads, evaluates, and collaborates with assistant coaches and support staff. The head coach is responsible for ensuring full compliance with all university, conference, and NCAA/Ivy League/ECAC rules while serving as the primary ambassador for the program within the campus community and beyond. Develops a varsity program within the parameters of the structure and regulations of the Ivy League, ECAC Hockey, the NCAA, and the University. Develops and determines the recruitment program for and final selection of athletic talent for the University. Formulates and sets policies governing the strategies of play and conditioning of student-athletes and ensures such goals are met. Trains and conditions student-athletes; determines the mental and physical condition of student-athletes and changes training methods if warranted. Independently determines and shapes the strategy, technical aspects, and game preparation; teaches team concepts. Oversees such areas as recruitment; fund-raising; performance of athletes; contest management; and administrative details required to carry out contests. Supervises and directs activities of Assistant Coaches and support personnel. Manages the team budget. Promotes a positive image of the athletics program in the New Haven community, at the University, for alumni, and on a national level. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Abilities

  1. Knowledge of effective coaching techniques and best practices.
  2. Ability to work in a diverse environment and maintain effective relationships with administrators, parents, students, and alumni.
  3. Ability to organize and manage all facets of the program, including recruiting, scouting, individual instruction, budget planning, and monitoring academic progress.
  4. Ability to lead and work independently as well as within a team environment; knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.
  5. Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
