Head Coach – Spirt Teams

Augustana University invites application for the position of Head Coach – Spirit Teams. This position is responsible for the leadership, management, and overall direction of the university’s cheerleading, dance team, and mascot programs. This position serves as the primary administrator and technical coach for all spirit groups, ensuring high standards of performance, safety, academic success, and representation of Augustana Athletics at campus, athletic, community, and national events. The position works in close collaboration with athletics, the university marching band, and external partners to advance the visibility and success of the spirit programs.

• Provide comprehensive leadership and oversight for all cheerleading, dance team, and mascot programs. 
• Direct, coordinate, and supervise all spirit program activities with assistance from assistant and volunteer coaches.
• Coordinate and manage spirit group appearances and performances at athletic events, campus activities, community engagements, and national events.
• Ensure high-quality performance standards and maximize crowd engagement and team support.
• Coordinate scheduling and collaboration with the Augustana Marching Band when applicable.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

• Coordinate and manage spirit group appearances and performances at athletic events, campus activities, community engagements, and national events.
• Ensure high-quality performance standards and maximize crowd engagement and team support.
• Coordinate scheduling and collaboration with the Augustana Marching Band when applicable.
• Lead recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of all spirit program members.
• Monitor academic performance and promote student-athlete success and accountability.
• Provide technical instruction and ongoing skill development for all participants.
• Ensure compliance with national safety standards, rules, and certifications related to cheer, dance, and stunt activities.
• Implement and oversee safety training protocols and monitor practice environments to ensure athlete well-being.
• Collaborate with Sports Medicine staff regarding injury prevention, treatment protocols, and physical examinations.
• Develop and manage program budgets, financial records, and related administrative processes.
• Plan, organize, and execute fundraising initiatives to support program needs.
• Coordinate team participation in community events and outreach activities.
• Organize youth clinics, recruitment events, alumni engagement opportunities, and advisory programming.
• Represent spirit programs at external functions as needed.
• Maintain regular communication with the program’s direct supervisor and other designated administrators.
• Additional duties and responsibilities may be assigned by the Director of Athletics and/or designee.
• Other duties as assigned to help build the brand and promote Augustana Athletics.

Required Qualifications: 

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• Preference will be given to those with experience specific to coaching cheerleading and dance.
• Must be able to work varying hours which may include days, nights, weekends and holidays.

Preferred Qualifications: 

• Previous coaching experience on the high school and collegiate level program preferred as an Assistant or Head Coach. 
• Minimum three years coaching experience and dance experience.
• AACCA Spirit Safety certified.
• Experience in recruiting academically sound, qualified athletes. 
• College cheerleading and dance experience.
