Job Summary

The Head Coach, Women’s Tennis, is responsible for the leadership, organization, and administration of the university’s NCAA Division I women’s tennis program. This position oversees all aspects of the program, including coaching, recruiting, student-athlete development, academic success, compliance, and daily operations, while ensuring adherence to NCAA, conference, Texas State University System, and Lamar University regulations. The Head Coach advances the mission and values of the Athletics Department by promoting competitive success, academic achievement, and the holistic development of student-athletes.

Essential Job Functions

Program Leadership and Coaching:

• Provides leadership and direction for all aspects of the women’s tennis program.
• Plans, organizes, and conducts practices, training sessions, and competitions.
• Develops match strategies and individualized athlete-development plans.
• Directs coaching decisions during competitions.
• Establishes standards for discipline, sportsmanship, and program culture.

Recruiting and Student-Athlete Development:

• Develops and executes a comprehensive recruiting strategy.
• Evaluates and recruits prospective student-athletes in compliance with NCAA and conference regulations.
• Maintains recruiting logs and compliance documentation using systems such as Teamworks.
• Promotes academic success, retention, leadership development, and graduation of student-athletes.
• Monitors academic progress and collaborates with academic support services.

Program Administration and Compliance:

• Ensures compliance with NCAA, conference, TSUS, and university regulations.
• Manages program operations, including scheduling, travel, equipment, and logistics.
• Coordinates match scheduling, practice facilities, and competition logistics.
• Oversees and manages program budget.
• Supervises graduate assistant(s) and support staff.
• Maintains required compliance documentation and reporting.

Community Engagement, Fundraising, and Representation:

• Participates in fundraising, donor engagement, and alumni relations activities.
• Represents the program through outreach, camps, clinics, and public appearances.
• Promotes program visibility and engagement within the university and community.
• Supports Athletics Department initiatives and special events.

Collaboration and Student-Athlete Support Services:

• Works collaboratively with athletics administration, sports medicine, strength and conditioning, marketing, and communications staff.
• Supports student-athlete health, wellness, and life-skills development.
• Coordinates with internal departments to enhance program success and student-athlete experience.

Minimum and Desired Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
• Three to five years of collegiate tennis coaching experience or related experience at the collegiate or professional level.
• Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA Division I rules and regulations.
• Experience recruiting student athletes at the collegiate level.
• Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
• Ability to effectively supervise and develop coaching and support staff.
• Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and extensive travel as required for competition and recruiting.

Desired Qualifications:

• Master’s degree from an accredited institution.
• Previous experience as a collegiate head coach or high-level assistant coach.
• Demonstrated record of competitive success at the collegiate level.
• Experience in recruiting both domestic and international student athletes.
• Experience managing budgets and administrative operations within a collegiate athletics program.
• Familiarity with Teamworks Compliance & Recruiting or similar systems.

Physical Conditions:

• Standing and moving for extended periods during practices, competitions, and recruiting activities.
• Demonstrating tennis techniques and participating in training activities as needed.
• Working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Lifting and transporting equipment and related materials.
• Frequent and extended travel for recruiting and competition.

Job Conditions:

• This position requires extensive evening and weekend work as well as frequent travel for recruitment and competition.
• Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor athletic environments and may involve exposure to varying weather conditions.
• The role operates in a fast-paced intercollegiate athletics environment with significant public visibility and performance expectations.
• The Head Coach must manage multiple priorities while maintaining compliance with NCAA, conference, and institutional regulations and representing the university in a professional manner.
