POSITION SUMMARY:
Fisk University strives to have a highly competitive Men’s basketball program, recognized nationally both athletically and academically, consistent with the student-athlete philosophy of NAIA which generates college and community enthusiasm and support. The Head Men’s Basketball Coach performs responsible for overall program leadership including: planning, coaching, recruiting, fundraising, management, and leadership.
The Men’s Basketball Coach must be able to independently organize training, competition, recruiting, events, travel, personnel, and budget for maximum efficiency of the programs Work is performed under general supervision and performance evaluation is based upon completion of assignments and results obtained. Fisk University is some strong liberal arts, academically focused learning environment committed to student success in the classroom as well as in competition, and expects to be competitive in its sports offerings.
Head coaches are the most visible representatives of the University and in being so, are held to a very high level of scrutiny and expectations. As a highly visible University representative of the students, faculty, staff, administration and alumni, he/she is expected to carry themselves and express themselves in a manner commensurate with the great tradition and reputation of the University. Head coaches should adhere to all University and NAIA rules, regulations and bylaws. They are required to report any known NAIA violations to the Compliance Coordinator or Athletics Director, and be responsible for the education and monitoring of assistant coaches, student athletes and any subordinate as it relates to NAIA regulations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :
Develop, and administer a highly competitive Men’s basketball program, consistent with the student-athlete philosophy of NAIA athletics, which generates College and community enthusiasm and support. Become competitive at the conference, regional and national levels. Oversee all administrative and coaching activities within the women’s basketball program.
Meet or exceed established recruiting targets. Coordinate recruiting efforts with the admission office; develop a successful team recruiting strategy; visit high schools to meet with coaches and recruits; call, e-mail, text, and write prospects and coaches; record recruiting action. Maintain active communication with the admission staff through phone, in-person and electronic means (e-mail, text, etc.). Organize and participate in all on-campus recruiting activities including admissions recruiting days, official campus visits, and overnight programs.
Create and foster a positive team culture that emphasizes individual and group leadership development. Ensure the team atmosphere and environment grows proportionally as each team develops.
Develop and implement an on-going fund-raising plan in collaboration with Director of Athletics and office of institutional advancement.
Investigate and develop training, competition and travel schedules.
Organize and purchase equipment, develop team traditions, hire coaching staff and develop marketing materials related to the basketball program.
Schedule all home and away competitions and set appropriate practice days and times for women’s basketball in accordance with NAIA rules and regulations.
Assist the Director of Athletics in the hiring of graduate assistants (GA’s) and any part-time assistant Men’s basketball coaches. Act as immediate supervisor for part-time coaches, GA’s, student-workers, and volunteer coaches. Create job descriptions, train, assign and evaluate their effectiveness on a regular basis.
Develop a retention program in conjunction with other departments on campus to ensure appropriate persistence from year-to-year.
Operate a fiscally sound program with an annually balanced budget. Review all budget activities and expenditures on a regular basis. Submit purchase order requests in an appropriate and timely fashion.
Actively encourage leadership and scholarship among student-athletes. Monitor the academic progress of all the athletes on the teams, in collaboration with the director of academic support services, assistant and associate athletic directors, and the athletic director. Adhere to all compliance and eligibility rules and regulations. Participate in the department’s leadership and scholarship programs.
Other related duties as appropriately assigned. There will be an administrative duty officially assigned to the position.
