Duties and Responsibilities:

• Under administrative direction, the Head Coach is responsible for planning, administering, and evaluating the overall operation of the NCAA Division I Women’s Water Polo Program to include, but not limited to, academic achievement of student-athletes, on deck   coaching, recruitment of qualified prospects, supervision of assistant coaches and other staff assigned to the program, compliance, program management (eligibility, scheduling, travel, budget, equipment), and student-athlete welfare.  The Head Coach assumes full responsibility for ensuring that team performance is competitive in the affiliated conference with the goal of achieving post-season competition annually.  Reports to the Athletics Director or designee.
• *Promote the institutional position on intercollegiate issues as determined, in compliance with administrative policy and procedures adopted by the University, Conference or the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
• *Provide leadership and oversight for the academic progress and eligibility status of student-athletes including promoting and maintaining an environment that encourages academic achievement as measured by academic eligibility, retention and graduation.
• *Organize, conduct, direct, and evaluate practices and intercollegiate competitions.   Teach necessary skills from the basic fundamentals to the techniques and strategies of team play.  Direct the conditioning and training of student-athletes to insure proper preparation for intercollegiate athletic competition.
• *Develop and implement a recruiting program which evaluates, recruits, and selects qualified prospects who have the ability to compete in the classroom and athletically.   Actively seek out and encourage a diverse group of prospects and assist them through the application process.   Work collaboratively with the staff of the Compliance, Student-Athlete Services, and Student-Athlete Academic Services Offices to qualify and process prospects in a timely and efficient manner.   Make recurring contacts by telephone, written correspondence, off-campus visits and evaluations, and coordination of campus visits.

• *Recommend scholarship awards for prospects and student-athletes to the Athletics Director or designee.
• *Oversee the academic progress and success of student-athletes including promoting and maintaining an environment that encourages academic achievement as measured by academic eligibility, retention, and graduation.
• *Promote and maintain an environment where the physical, mental, social and academic well-being of all student-athletes are a priority and prevent other influences that may interfere with their scholastic, athletics, or related interests.
• *Promote and foster a positive team environment, appropriate behavior, and sportsmanship by team members, assistant coaches, and staff.  Responsible for the conduct of team members both on and off the deck.
• *Recommend budget and administer approved allocation.
• *In collaboration with the assigned equipment manager, oversee the selection, purchase, fitting, and upkeep of team equipment.
• *Exercise functional and administrative supervision for any assigned assistant coaches and other support staff, to include their compliance with NCAA, Conference and University rules and policies which govern the conduct of the Intercollegiate Athletics program.
• *Prepare data and reports as necessary in support of University requirements.
• *Arrange a competitive competition schedule as approved and coordinate travel arrangements needed in support thereof.
• Organize and participate in sports clinics, exhibitions, and camps as approved.
• *Confer with the Athletics Director or designee on personnel, financial and facilities requirements for the sport program.
• *Actively participate in fundraising, promotional activities, speaking engagements, and alumni events as requested or approved for the sports program.  Participate in public relations activities that strengthen the relationship between the University and the Community.
• *Per NCAA Division I Bylaw 11.1.1.1 or as amended, the head coach is presumed to be responsible for the actions of all institutional staff members who report, directly, or indirectly, to the head coach.  The head coach shall promote an atmosphere of compliance within the program and shall monitor the activities of all institutional staff members involved with the program who report, directly or indirectly, to the coach.  
• *Responsible for performing the duties of a Campus Security Authority as defined by University policy and federal law with regards to the Clery Act.
• *Maintains confidentiality to include but not limited to information, files and records that the incumbent may obtain or possess, in accordance with federal and state laws and University of Hawaii policies. 
• *Maintains collaborative working relationships with administrators, staff, and coaches in the department, other college offices, affiliated Conference offices and peers, and appropriate relationships with members of the media, donors, and other individuals interested in the Athletics Department.
• *Know, recognize and comply with the laws, policies, rules and regulations governing the University of Hawai‘i and its employees, and the rules of the NCAA and affiliated conferences as now constituted or as may be amended in the future.   Immediately advises the  Athletics Director or designee if there is reasonable cause to believe violations, whether by employees, students, or others, have occurred or will occur.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited four year college or university
• Three (3) years of experience coaching water polo at the college or university level; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
• Knowledge and ability to organize, implement and develop a water polo program as played at the collegiate level.
• Demonstrated ability to recruit academically and athletically prepared intercollegiate student-athletes. 
• Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
• Demonstrated ability to establish, foster, and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
• Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills. 
• Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays and travel 
• Ability to lead/supervise/evaluate assistant coaches/staff. 
• Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with people of diverse backgrounds including but not limited to people of all ages with various ethnicities, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
• Valid driver’s license.
• First Aid, CPR and AED certification within 45 days of employment start date.
• Lifeguard certification within 45 days of employment start date 

• Computer, cell phone and social media technology competency.   Desirable Qualifications:

• Successful Division I Water Polo coaching experience.

• Demonstrated ability to coach and recruit the highly skilled student-athlete.

• Knowledge and understanding of Division I sport specific program and NCAA rules.

• Ability to understand and work effectively in Hawai‘i’s multi-cultural society.
