Job Description

This posting is for a full-time, 12-month, exempt position. The head women’s basketball coach is responsible for all aspects of the Women’s Basketball Program: operation of a NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Program, oversee recruiting yearly for the varsity and JV basketball program, understand and know NCAA II recruiting rules and regulations, fundraising, and game day set-up.  Candidate must have the ability to coach the student athletes in game and practice situations.  Monitor student progress throughout the semester and guide and counsel student athletes towards Graduation.  Supervise staff (Assistant Coach, Stipend Assistant, and JV Coach), and maintain communication between coaching staff and administration.  

Essential Functions

This position requires regular, predictable, reliable attendance in the office environment.

1.    Administer the intercollegiate program in compliance with the University, NCAA & GMAC rules & regulations as required.
2.    Recommend & administer specific sports budget.
3.    Participate in the public relations & promotion of the sports program.
4.    Supervise assistant coaches & other staff as required.
5.    Consult with various campus agencies as to eligibility, admission of student athletes, facilities needed, security, & financial aid.
6.    Consult with student athlete as related to discipline, academic progress, personal growth.
7.    Coordinate plan for physical conditioning & practice preparation.
8.    Oversee practice sessions, pre-game preparations & on the floor, field, court during competition.

9.    Evaluate talent of prospective student athletes, organization of home visits & phone contacts with prospect & family.
10.    Perform necessary duties in relationship to fund raising through the Oilers Club.
11.    Plan & organize all aspects of team travel.
12.    Establish consistent guidelines & requirements for participation in the sport of basketball.
13.    Report any violations of compliance regulations.
14.    Ability to coach the student athletes in game & practice situations.
15.    Organize a team that is competitive & representative of the University’s philosophy & compatible with its mission.
16.    Meet recruiting goals.
17.    Perform all other duties deemed appropriate for the position.

Supervisory Responsibility
Supervision exercised over athletes, assistant coaches, stipend assistants, student workers and game-day staff (non-students).

Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. In some situations, the noise level in the work environment can be loud.

Physical Demands
Walks, sits, stands, bends, lifts, and moves continually during working hours. Is subject to lifting over 50 pounds.  Must be able to lift raise or lower an object from one level to another (includes upward and pulling motion) of 50-75 lbs. and must be able to carry/transport an object/equipment weighing 50-75 lbs.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time 12-month position, and hours of work and days vary depending on athletic practice and competition schedule. Candidate must be available Sunday-Saturday.  

Travel
This job requires travel with athletic team to competitions and events.  A valid US Drivers’ license with a safe driving record is required, and the energy and ability to travel.  Some evening and weekend work, and some overnight travel are expectations of this position.

Required Education and Experience
1.    Bachelor’s degree.
2.    Three years of coaching experience at the collegiate level.    
3.    Knowledge of intercollegiate athletics, rules and regulations of athletic associations and conferences including eligibility, recruiting and certification. 
5.    Candidate must have a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record.  
6.    Ability to objectively evaluate physical performance and mental capabilities related to the intercollegiate athletic program.  
7.    Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff and the public.
8.    Strong organizational, oral and written communication, time management and interpersonal skills.
9.    Ability to protect confidential information and present a professional demeanor.
10.    Team-oriented individual with willingness to take initiative and be flexible, and the ability to work under occasional pressure.
11.    Ability to work effectively with an ethnic, cultural and diverse student population.
12.    Organize and operate a competitive NCAA II intercollegiate Basketball program.
13.    Ability to have vision and develop a plan for success.

Preferred Education and Experience
1.    Master’s degree.
2.    Additional years of coaching experience.
