The Horticultural Attendant is a nonsupervisory classified position. The general responsibility of this job is to perform the skilled labor necessary to maintain the landscaping, grounds, athletic fields and facilities of the LSU Athletic Department.

30% Operation of various pieces of mowing andgrounds maintenance equipmentsuch as diesel powered lawn mowers, turf vacuums, aerators, top dressers, sod cutters, turf type utility vehicles, flat bed utility vehicles, etc. Specific task related to operation of this equipment include actual operation preventative maintenance, cleaning equipment andreporting suspected and actual mechanicalfailures.
15% Assist in set up of various athletic events such as football, baseball and softball games, soccer matches, track meets, gymnastic meets, as well as many other special events of the athletic department.
10% Assist in cleaning of athletic fields and stadiums such as litter pick up, blowing of bleachers and grandstands, cleaning of bathrooms and locker rooms, etc.
10% Operation of power hand tools such as: string trimmers, power blowers, pruners, edgers, mowers, pressure washers, field marking paint machines, etc. Perform preventative maintenance on this type of equipment, keep it clean and safely operating. Position must be trained in proper and safe operation of this equipment.
10% Assist in marking of athletic fields for games with both paint and chalk such as baseball foul lines, football field markings including large painted letters, soccer and track markings, etc. Position requires training in these areas to lessen detrimental effects on turfgrass.
10% Perform specialty tasks such as planting, sodding, pruning, fertilization, application of unrestricted pesticides and herbicides for weed and insect control, irrigation installation and maintenance, drainage installation and maintenance, etc.
5% Perform various tasks as assigned by supervisor such as, but not limited to, litter pick up, hand shoveling and raking, grading, weeding, assisting mechanics, welders, carpenters, painters, etc.
5% Train and work with laborers, student workers, and transient workers to perform all tasks as required by the department.
5% Other duties as requested by supervisor or department head.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
One year of experience in any of the following: farming, the care and maintenance of trees and shrubs, or groundskeeping.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
College training will substitute for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience provided that six semester hours of each thirty is in any of the following fields: botany, agriculture, horticulture, floriculture, agronomy, forestry, turf management, landscape management or landscape architecture.
Vocational training in the care and maintenance of trees and shrubs will substitute for the required experience on a month for month basis.
NOTE:
Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.
PREFERREDQUALIFICATIONS:
Experience in athletic field maintenance including but not limited to: pregame field preparation, football field lining, baseball and softball infield dirt preparation (dragging, watering, etc.), marking foul lines, pitcher’s mound and home plate repairs, and experience in turf equipment operation.
SPECIAL OR PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Ability to work extended days, weekends. Routinely requires lifting of 20-30 lbs andworking around tight bleacher areas; some tasks involve frequent lifting of 50-60 lbs; certain tasks require heavy lifting in excess of 60 lbs although the tasks may be intermittent andmay be performed withassistance. Must possess a valid Class “E” driver’s license; Due to the nature of the position and/or position responsibilities this position shall be subject to drug/alcohol testing in accordance withUniversityPS-67. PS 18, this position is considered essential and may be required to report or stay on campus in the event of emergency or closure. Due to the position's physical requirements, a pre-employment physical examination will be required per FASOP: HR-04.
