POSITION PURPOSE: The Kegley Center for Student Success (KCSS) within CSUB Athletics works to ensure that CSUB's Student-Athletes receive the support they need to maintain academic success, remain academically eligible to compete, earn valuable life skills, earn their 4-year or even graduate degree, and ultimately find employment in their chosen field. Support includes academic advising, tutoring, mentoring, life skills workshops, academic success workshops, career building, networking, and a productive space to study.

Under the administrative direction of the Director of Athletics or designee, this role has oversight of all Academic Services available for student athletes and leads academic staff housed within the Kegley Center. The role also includes gathering, evaluating, and submitting departmental academic data and reports in compliance with NCAA, Conference, and Campus requirements. The Assistant Athletics Director for Academic Services also spends part of their time advising students from assigned teams on a weekly basis.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Academic Services & KCSS Leadership/Reporting

• Provide overall administration and supervision of the Kegley Center for Student Success academic support initiatives, which serves the 16 Division I teams and 325+ student-athletes at CSUB as well as the general student body on occasion.
• Perform major program analysis responsibilities for the Academic Success within KCSS and implement administrative action to change and/or modify athletic academic advising policies and procedures in compliance with campus and NCAA eligibility requirements in order to better serve our student-athletes.
• Provide leadership and strategic planning for the KCSS, including but not limited to staff supervision and development, coalition building with campus and community stakeholders, coordination and implementation of program and services, and the overall evaluation and assessment of signature programs sponsored by the KCSS.
• Evaluate and resolve the most difficult eligibility and program issues to increase eligibility and retention in collaboration with compliance.
• Perform departmental academic data gathering, evaluation, and submission to NCAA, conference, and CSUB, which includes yearly Academic Progress Rate (APR) and Graduation Success Rate (GSR).
• Serve as the liaison on campus, department, and within the community by meeting with stakeholders and various committees on campus in representing of student-athletes and the academic athletics department; incorporating a high degree of tact and persuasiveness to maintain effective and cooperative relationships.
• Advocate for student-athlete needs by attending and participating in campus wide and community meetings. Interpret policies and implementations that affect the student-athlete and general population.
• Manage the overall budget management for KCSS and seek opportunities for grant and other avenues of funding (e.g. campus initiative funding, NCAA grants, NCAA APR/GSR benchmarks, etc.).

Staff Supervision, Retention, & Development

• Lead and supervise academic staff, graduate student leaders, and student assistants.
• Establish effective forms of communication and supervision for academic staff, which include regular email updates, reports, and in-person weekly meetings.
• Provide guidance and leadership to academic staff on individual and group sensitive and complex situations pertaining to student athletes’ academics and eligibility.
• Assign and delegate areas of responsibility to academic staff members to promote professional growth, development, knowledge.
• Collaborate with staff to research, evaluate, and encourage participation in professional development opportunities within campus and outside agencies.
• Furnish the proper knowledge and training necessary to academic staff members to complete the job at hand.
• Provide ongoing training for academic staff members by soliciting training/information sessions utilizing campus resources and/or outside agencies.
• Consolidate diverse academic staff members to work in a harmonious, safe, productive, and work effective environment established though the implementation of mid-year and yearly retreats and open communication.
• Perform yearly evaluations of staff and lead the hiring process and recruitment.

Academic Advising & Maintain Student-Athlete Academic Success and Eligibility

• Assess academic support and other retention services in accordance with University policies to ensure successful transitions.
• Provide detailed and accurate athletic academic advising, successful learning support, and opportunities in community outreach and professional development for all student-athletes.
• Advise students related to issues of academic concerns or career interests and refer students to appropriate services for additional guidance support, and/or intervention.
• Advise students in making successful progress toward their degree (PTO) objectives in compliance to NCAA requirements to maintain their eligibility, provide learning experiences, which supplement those in the classroom; and to assist and encourage students to effectively utilize the knowledge, skills, and abilities learned during their university careers.
• Advise student-athletes in resolving, both proactively and reactively, any issues affecting their athletics eligibility and their educational/career goals, beginning when they are in high school, or another college being recruited by CSUB coaches and continuing through (or sometimes beyond) graduation.
• Review individual student records and materials for possible update to reflect status relative to completion of requirements and/or graduation for assigned students.
• Act as a liaison between faculty, student services personnel, and assigned students.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE – Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university and four (4) years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience advising students individually or in groups or leading an academic services team. A graduate degree in a related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

• Previous experience supervising or leading an academic services team.
• Professional experience in working with student-athletes, education plans, and NCAA Division I rules and regulations.
• Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment possessing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
