Job Description Summary

Organization's Summary Statement:

As a member of a progressive Academic Support Team, the Learning Specialist will manage a caseload of at-risk student-athletes. This individual will be responsible for developing and implementing individualized learning plans for assigned student-athletes for the purpose of providing support, developing academic skills, and engaging ongoing academic assessment. Specific duties will include, but are not limited to: participating in the recruitment, orientation, pre-registration, and enrollment of student-athletes and acting as a liaison to faculty, administrators, and coaches regarding student-athlete academic matters. Tracking and monitoring student-athlete progress toward degree while adhering to university, Big Ten Conference, and NCAA rules and regulations; meeting regularly with a caseload of student-athletes in order to assess academic needs; working individually with assigned student-athletes to enhance academic skill development; working cooperatively with Athletic Academic Counselors and Program Coordinators while providing comprehensive academic support to student-athletes; conducting assessments and evaluations for all incoming student-athletes and others, when needed; acting as a liaison with the Office of Accessibility and Disability Services on campus; and performing all other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands: The position requires prolonged periods of sitting and computer use, along with the ability to operate standard office equipment with manual dexterity. The role involves occasional standing or walking to attend meetings or conduct orientations and may require lifting light office materials (up to 20 pounds). Visual acuity and effective verbal and auditory communication are essential for reviewing financial data and interacting with employees in person, by phone, or virtually.

Preferences: Prior experience in an athletic department or high-demand academic/office environment.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Experience: One (1) years of experience providing counseling or advising services, or conducting recruitment or enrollment activities. Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education. Knowledge of best practices in the recruitment of student athletes. Knowledge of establishing and implementing individualized learning plans. Skill in oral and written communication. Skill in the use of Microsoft Office products. Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws. Ability to multitask while demonstrating a commitment to customer service and sensitivity to a culturally and ethnically diverse community.
