Job Title: Mascot Handler Full/Part Time: Part-Time

Basic Function and Scope of Responsibilities: Help spread Shark Nation spirit across Long Island University’s campuses and the greater community! As members of the Finley Mascot Team, Mascot Handlers are expected to attend LIU Athletics and Long Island University campus events, community events, competitions, and other events throughout the year, all while accompanying Finley the LIU Shark and engaging and interacting with audience members and attendees to spread Shark Nation spirit! LIU is seeking highly energetic and motivated students to join the Finley Mascot Team and become the ultimate LIU Ambassador!
Principal Responsibilities: Represent the Finley Mascot Team and accompany Finley the LIU Shark at all LIU Athletics, Long Island University, and other events. Required events include but are not limited to all LIU Football home games and select away games, select LIU Men’s and Women’s Basketball home and away games, select LIU Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey home and away games, New Student Orientation, Move-In, and Welcome Week programs and other campus traditions, and non-University events as requested, depending on availability. Assist the mascot with getting into and out of the costume. Interact with audience members and attendees to promote fan engagement. Participate in pre-, in-, and post-game promotions including contests, photo opportunities, t-shirt tosses, etc.; meet and greet fans prior to and after games. Assist in managing the Finley Mascot Team social media accounts. Attend select Cheerleading, Dance, and Marching Band practices at the discretion of the programs’ head coaches/directors to support the unified goals of the Shark Nation Spirit Squad. Participate in spirit camp prior to the start of the fall semester. Help create skits, dance routines, and other forms of mascot-related entertainment and crowd interaction. Research and create props and costumes for the mascot. Assist in mascot costume operations, including creativity, care, cleaning, maintenance, etc.
Qualifications: Maintain full-time enrollment status at the University (12+ credits for undergraduate students; 9+ credits for graduate students). Maintain good judicial standing with the University. Maintain good academic standing with the University (2.0 cumulative GPA) Demonstrate an ability to work flexible hours. Be well-organized, punctual, and flexible to meet time, priority, and workload demands. Be highly energetic and in good physical condition. Demonstrate an ability to analyze and interpret common social expressions and client needs. Be fan-friendly and outgoing; works well with children and all other community members. Transportation between LIU campuses is required. A personal mode of transportation is preferred.
Training, Skills, Knowledge, Experience: Excellent interpersonal skills and an outgoing personality. Great communication skills and ability to interact with the public. 2 Must be courteous, friendly, reliable, and punctual. Willingness to represent Long Island University, the Shark Nation Spirit Squad, and the Finley Mascot Team in a positive manner.
Working Conditions: Flexible hours, including weekends and evenings, are required to properly execute the position’s role. Occasional travel to/from other LIU campuses and non-University properties for the facilitation of trainings, meetings, games, and other university functions.
Compensation: Mascot Handlers are federal work-study (FWS) student workers and are compensated $16.00/hour.
