Coaches at Asbury University (AU) are expected to not simply coach teams, but rather build programs. The guiding philosophy for coaches is to “Recruit, Disciple and Build.” Essential responsibilities are focused on the following areas: Discipleship, Recruiting, Pursuing Excellence, Servant Leadership and Administration.
Primary Duties:
Responsible for the management and development of all aspects of the Asbury University track & field program but not limited to:
Discipleship of the students in the program.
Teaching and modeling the value of Christian competition (Serve | Train | Compete for the glory of God).
Developing student-athletes into a competitive team that will consistently compete for championships (Collegiate Conference of the South – CCS and National Christian College Athletic Association – NCCAA).
Recruiting and retaining quality student-athletes who value and understand Asbury’s mission and vision.
Recruiting to a target roster of 30 student-athletes (15 men’s roster / 15 women’s roster) not including members of the cross country roster.
Hiring and supervising assistant coaches (1 full-time assistant and 3 part-time assistants) and team managers with the approval of the VP.
Planning, oversight and administration of the track & field budget.
Organizing, planning and scheduling all practices, conditioning sessions and competitions.
Abiding by all NCAA, CCS and NCCAA rules and guidelines.
Monitoring academic performance of student-athletes and partnering with Student Life for discipleship, development and retention of student-athletes.
Assisting the VP in purchasing equipment, supplies, uniforms and practice gear.
Working closely with the facilities coordinator to manage and maintain the track & field facility and equipment.
Conducting summer and identification track & field camps.
Coordinating team travel (transportation, lodging, meals, itineraries, class excuses).
Creating ministry and services opportunities for student-athletes to positively impact the community.
Coordinating and leading annual crowd-funding initiative (eTeamSponsor) for the track & field program.
Developing track & field alumni communication plan with the goal of hosting an annual on-campus alumni event.
Attending departmental meetings.
Other Duties:
Assist the Athletic Department staff with operational roles including: event management, marketing, student-athlete services, and facilities.
Assist with annual Athletic Department events including: Eagle Awards and Golf Fundraiser.
Other duties as assigned.
Job Skills and Specifications:
Exhibit and articulate evidence of current, practical knowledge of the sport of track & field.
Exhibit and articulate evidence of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
Ability to become knowledgeable of, support and uphold the philosophy of both Asbury University and the Asbury Athletic Department.
Exhibit professionalism at all times. This applies to conduct, appearance, and fulfillment of job responsibilities. Be an example in word and action.
Demonstrate concern with the total development and welfare of each student-athlete not just athletic development, but spiritual, educational, character and social development as well.
Continually strive for personal growth physically, spiritually, professionally, mentally and socially.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited 4-year institution, master’s preferred.
Experience in coaching track & field, collegiate level coaching preferred.
Commitment to provide positive experiences for student athletes in the track & field program. Exhibit a commitment to abide by all University, conference, NCAA Division III, and NCCAA rules and guidelines. Experience with and commitment to working with diverse student populations.
