Medicine | Sports Medicine Research Institute
The Psychotherapist/Mental Performance Counselor position provides mental performance counseling
services for OSU Sports Medicine to OSU varsity student-athletes. The reporting unit for this
position is in Sports Medicine and Sport Psychology and Wellness Services. Responsibilities would
include fulfilling the duties of a full-time staff member of Sport Psychology and Wellness Services
to include group and individual therapy, team and coach consultation, case management, and
providing wellness interventions as requested. The psychotherapist/athletic counselor must be
competent in evidence-based clinical skills as well as cognitive and interpersonal skills. The
psychotherapist/mental performance counselor is expected to practice within the established Medical
Center and standards of practice (policies, procedures, protocols), and adhere to key results areas
of the Medical Center. Required Qualifications: An LISW, LPCC, PhD, or PsyD with
experience/expertise in mental skills training, as well as working with college student-athletes.
Applicant must be a licensed or licensed eligible mental health provider in the state of Ohio.
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s or doctoral degree in kinesiology, sport psychology or
performance psychology. Demonstrated experience developing and implementing an organizational
curriculum to improve mental performance of elite athletes.
Develop vision for OSU SPAWS Mental Performance Services.
• Provided psychotherapy and mental skills training to OSU varsity athletes and teams.
• Engage in research and evaluation to monitor and enhance OSU SPAWS mental performance
services.
• Coordinate with Ohio State Athletics Department stakeholders and support staff to integrate
psychological principles into training programs, completion strategies, and team dynamics.
• Assist in education and consulting with SPAWS staff on latest best practices related to Mental
Performance in the student-athlete population.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Master's Degree in Social Work or Counseling or education accepted by the State of Ohio for licensure. Licensed Independent Chemical Dependency Counselor (LICDC), Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC), or Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW) required. 1 year of relevant experience required. 2-4 years of relevant experience preferred.
