The Part-Time Assistant Cheer Coach, is a part-time 10-month position that reports to the Head Coach, TJC Cheer. The function of the cheerleading squad is to provide a visible positive presence to promote school spirit at Tyler Junior College home athletic games and events. This position fosters connection with the squad, athletic teams, spectators and guests. The Assistant Cheer Coach is responsible for enhancing the game day and community environment, while assisting the TJC cheer program. This position does require evenings and weekend hours.
Essential Functions and Duties
The duties are to assist with the responsibilities listed below:
Actively participating in all college activities which lead to student recruitment, retention and completion
Preparing, organizing and attending practices, games, performances, appearances, competitions and off-season training
Provide general event and game day support by arranging appearances for the team at athletic, College and community events, while placing emphasis on props and enhancing the game day experience throughout the season
Responsible for overseeing the Mascot, arranging all performer’s appearance requests, as well as marketing the mascot by creating content for all social platforms
Marketing the TJC Cheerleading program to the public and recruits through community service and maintaining the TJC Cheerleading website and social media accounts
Traveling with the squad to and from events as needed, including but not limited to out-of-town, athletic events, cheer camps, performances and competitions
Recruiting cheerleader candidates including, but not limited to, visiting and communicating with regional and national high schools, attending local try-outs, watching videos, etc.

Recruiting and overseeing the Apache Flag Crew by actively recruiting, coordinating and overseeing its membership
Assist with tryouts and auditions to select new members of the squad each Spring
Assist with fundraising activities, including hosting a youth cheer camp and recruit clinics
Maintain and inventory supplies and uniforms and ordering supplies and gear, as needed.
Coordinate participation in cheerleading camps and competitions, including all choreography, music, travel arrangements, supplies, etc.
Ensure the health and safety of the cheerleaders and participants per established policies, procedures and guidelines
Assist with special events hosted by the Center for Student Life & Involvement, as needed
Performing other duties as assigned by Head Coach and the Director of Student Life
Qualifications
Requirements
Associate’s Degree in a related field
Two or more years of proven work experience with a cheer/dance team
USA Cheer safety certificate required or willing to obtain immediately
Must live locally to allow participation in community and college activities
Exhibit organizational and planning skills; experience advising student organizations or related skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in higher education, particularly in the areas of cheerleading and/or Student Life
- Certification through National Cheerleader Association as a cheerleading sponsor or coach
- Ability to demonstrate, teach, and critique the technical skills associated with co-ed, collegiate cheer team
- Demonstrate awareness of student development and learning, along with current trends in cheerleading
