This position is designated as ‘mandatory’ and, when contacted to report to work, its incumbent is expected to reach the campus as expeditiously as possible using normal precautions as dictated by the adverse weather conditions.
The Playing Fields Services Technician will assist in maintaining the University facilities in good working order and maintaining an overall pleasant working, teaching, and learning environment. This position is to support the associated grounds and landscaping requirements due to the development of expanded highly maintained landscaped areas of campus. This position will be mainly looking after the sports fields and surrounding areas. The maintenance includes all procedures associated with
NCAA
sports fields including line painting and clay infield work, herbicide, fungicide, insecticide, and fertilization treatments which require basic knowledge of materials, elemental horticulture, and the skill to fulfill these duties: litter control, weed control, trimming of undergrowth and pruning of trees, rip rap and erosion repair, upkeep of the drainage structures and snow and ice removal along walkways and steps.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Some knowledge of grounds keeping procedures, ability to follow instructions and to perform medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience, and two (2) years of related grounds experience.
University Preferred Qualifications:
Graduation from high school, or completion of its equivalency, and
three (3
) years of related grounds experience preferred.
The Playing Fields Services Technician performs under the direction of the Grounds Supervisor/Playing Fields Supervisor.
Duties include:
All maintenance procedures associated with
NCAA
division one sports fields
All maintenance procedures associated with Grounds work.
Assist in maintaining the University facilities in good working order and maintaining an overall pleasant working, teaching, and learning environment.
Daily tasks to include: litter control, tractor operation, weed eating, edging, blowing, mowing, seeding and fertilizing, installation, watering, irrigation repair, operation of irrigation, pruning, pesticide application, riding mowers, tree removal, storm clean up and snow removal.
Use hand tools such as shovels, rakes, pruning, regular saws, hedge and brush trimmers, and axes, as well as power lawnmowers, chain saws, snow blowers, and electric clippers.
Operate machines and equipment such as trucks, tractors, and other gardening and grounds maintenance-type equipment.
Perform more advanced grounds operations including but not limited to aerating, over-seeding, mowing, and fertilizing with tractors and other specialized equipment.
Use irrigation methods and control systems to adjust the amount of water consumption and reduce waste.
May apply fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides either occasionally or on a normal periodic basis.
May be required to obtain, mix, and transport chemicals and similar products and apply them in the correct amount, and in the correct areas. Clean the application equipment, and return it to inventory.
Report to Facilities Management when called to assist with clearing and cleaning streets, sidewalks, steps, and other areas of obstructions, such as snow, ice trees, etc. during inclement weather, which usually requires overtime hours, weekends, and holidays. Sometimes requires early morning travel in marginal weather conditions and long working hours.
Perform other duties as assigned and/or delegated to support all operations.
Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
High school diploma or
GED
equivalency.
Three
or more years of experience in professional turf-grass maintenance. (golf course/
NCAA
division 1 sports fields)
Experience marking out and painting sports fields.
Experience operating and maintaining Reel mowers
Experience in operating heavy grounds machinery.
Advanced pruning/plant care techniques.
Effectively communicate the English language (reading, writing, interpreting, and comprehending).
Selected candidates must have the mental and physical capabilities to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
Where applicable, must be eligible for required certification(s).
Valid NC State driver’s license or ability to obtain.
