Department Summary

UCLA Recreation is a large department within the Division of Campus Life in Student Affairs with approximately 90 full-time career and contract and over 1,000 part-time employees. UCLA Recreation provides extensive access to a broad range of recreational activities and wellbeing services, and offers programming which encompasses the competitive, passive, social, cultural, and instructional aspects of recreational activity. In addition, the department manages 15 of the University's recreational and athletic facilities offering recreation, competition, and numerous multi-use options for student and university events.
Position Summary

The Program Director, Competitive Sports, is responsible for managing and coordinating program operations for UCLA Recreation. Responsibilities include the development and management of a comprehensive program of over 50 club sports, more than 30 intramural activities for students, faculty and staff and a multi-dimensional program in instruction. The Program Director, Competitive Sports supervises full-time coordinators for intramural and club sports, as well as instructional programs. Under the general supervision of the Associate Director, work is initiated and carried out independently, following UC and departmental policies and procedures, as well as federal and state employment law. Ability to work independently, monitor work and set schedules to ensure that deadlines are met and customers are served. Performance is formally reviewed annually. Supervises and reviews performance of subordinates.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in sports management and administration. (Required)
  • Demonstrated experience in the areas of program supervision, policy development and leadership training. (Required)
  • Skill in budget management including development, initiating transactions, interpreting budget statements and reports. (Required)
  • Skill to select and order sports equipment, uniforms and specific recreation gear and apparatus. Ability to work with vendors and university offices in procuring said items. (Required)
  • Detailed knowledge of field and facility preparation to meet program and safety standards. (Required)
