Job Description

The Highlights:

This position provides comprehensive sports medicine services for DePaul student-athletes, with primary responsibility for the men’s basketball program, including injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, return-to-play coordination, and holistic wellness support. The role assists in the daily operations of the Athletic Training Room, supports the development of junior athletic trainers and sports medicine staff, and collaborates with physicians, coaches, administrators, and campus partners to promote student-athlete health, safety, and performance. This position requires sound professional judgment, strong communication, and a clear understanding of NCAA, BIG EAST Conference, DePaul University, FERPA, and HIPAA requirements, as well as the unique demands of a highly visible Division I men’s basketball program.

What You'll Do:

  1. Provide comprehensive athletic training services for student-athletes, with primary responsibility for the men’s basketball program. Oversee the prevention, evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and return-to-play process for athletic injuries and illnesses. Coordinate pre-participation physical examinations, develop preventative conditioning and injury-reduction strategies, manage treatment and referral plans, and collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals regarding surgery, specialized care, and ongoing treatment. Maintain accurate medical records, insurance documentation, and injury reports, and communicate relevant updates to coaches and staff in accordance with applicable privacy regulations. Provide athletic training coverage for all men’s basketball practices, home competitions, and away competitions.

  2. Support the daily operations of the Athletic Training Room. Conduct assigned office hours, provide practice and competition coverage, assist with treatment and rehabilitation services, and help ensure a safe, efficient, and professional sports medicine environment. Maintain specialized rehabilitation equipment, coordinate preventative maintenance, and research and recommend emerging technologies, equipment, and best practices when appropriate. Support the continued education, development, and learning of junior athletic trainers, interns, and other less experienced sports medicine staff by providing guidance, mentorship, and opportunities to build clinical skills and professional judgment. Monitor CPR certification status for designated coaches and staff, coordinate certification training, and ensure compliance with department expectations.

  3. Promote holistic student-athlete wellness. Educate, advise, and monitor student-athletes in areas including nutrition, hydration, sleep, mental well-being, recovery, and healthy lifestyle choices. Provide wellness support with an understanding of the unique demands, visibility, travel schedule, and competitive expectations associated with a high-profile Division I men’s basketball program.

  4. Maintain professional competency, licensure, and regulatory compliance. Pursue continuing education through conferences, seminars, research, and engagement with current athletic training philosophies, protocols, and best practices. Maintain knowledge of and adherence to NCAA, FERPA, HIPAA, institutional, departmental, and sports medicine policies and procedures. Attend and participate in regular NCAA rules compliance meetings and ensure all sports medicine activities align with applicable regulations and standards.
