Position Summary Information
As a senior leader, the Senior Director of UMC uses their extensive knowledge of digital and traditional media to develop and execute strategic internal and external communication strategies and campaigns that seek to educate, persuade and mobilize stakeholders around the University’s mission, vision, goals and objectives. The Senior Director of UMC, oversees all aspects of strategic internal and external communication for the University including: communication policy, media relations, creative editorial and design services; digital and social media; athletic communication; governmental relations; web development; issues management; and crisis planning and communication. Provides counsel to the president and executive officers regarding communication and public affairs issues.The Senior Director of UMC also provides strategic direction for the University’s licensing and trademark program, serves as the senior editor of the University magazine, The ROCK; and serves as the University’s official spokesperson.
5 – 7 years of progressively responsible experience in communication management preferably in higher education.Experience in building, mentoring and coaching a team of communications specialists.A commitment to promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.Bachelor’s degree and a combination of significant, related experience is required.Successful performance in an on-campus interview.
Ten or more years of progressively increasing responsibility in Marketing and/or Communication or a related field preferred.Master’s degree preferred.Demonstrated experience and leadership in managing a comprehensive strategic communications, media relations and public affairs programs to advance an organization’s mission and goals.A keen appreciation for the mission, goals, organization, operational and financial infrastructure, and culture of higher education. Innovative thinker, with a track record for translating strategic thinking into action plans and outputs.Must have a proven record of success in developing and implementing successful communication strategies within a complex organization utilizing multi-platform delivery systems.Comprehensive knowledge of communication principles and media relations techniques, experience in establishing and implementing integrated communication, public affairs and media relations strategies.Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal and presentation skills and the ability to present effectively to small and large groups and gain buy-in and support for ideas.Demonstrate excellent organizational skills and a collaborative style of leadership conducive to working effectively in an independent work environment.Appreciation for opportunities to advance and support cultural diversity.Excellent judgement and creative problem solving skills, including negotiation and conflict resolution.Superior management skills; ability to influence and engage direct and indirect reports and peers. Ability to multi-task, make decisions in a changing environment and anticipate future needs.Demonstrated crisis communication/management skills; knowledgeable about crisis planning and execution; comfortable in front of media and audiences; ability to project calm and inspire confidence; skilled in condensing complicated arguments into key talking points, and coaching institutional leadership.Ability to operate as an effective tactical and well as strategic thinker.Must be confident in dealing with highly confidential information, must demonstrate the highest levels of integrity, honesty and ethical behavior.
