Position Summary Information
James Madison University’s Facilities Management is accepting applications for a Senior Sports Turf Tech. Shift is Monday – Friday, 6:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., with overtime as required to cover special events and inclement weather. To help ensure the safety, playability, and aesthetics of sports turf facilities. Lead and direct assigned employees while also performing turfgrass management tasks specific to synthetic turf, creeping bentgrass, bermudagrass, bluegrass, tall fescue, and ryegrass and future grasses as needed to meet the needs and requirements of James Madison University. Lead the work of assigned employees on all tasks to ensure work is performed in an efficient manner while providing oversight of turfgrass and snow removal equipment. Provide on-site training as needed. Perform best management practices and sport-specific tasks on turfgrass as directed along with irrigation system inspections. Safely apply pesticides and fertilizers as directed. The employee is required to work all home football games. The employee in this position will be considered designated, meaning the work performed is essential to university operations and the employee will be required to work during periods of authorized closings.
Required: Working knowledge of general landscaping practices and procedures. Knowledge of proper handling, storage, and disposal of pesticides. Knowledge of turf maintenance and installation. Working knowledge of turfgrass management functions, particularly in the area of golf course and sports field maintenance specific to synthetic turf, Tyee and 007 creeping bentgrass, Patriot bermudagrass, bluegrass, tall fescue, and ryegrass. Must provide equipment oversight specific to golf course and sports turf maintenance including complex reel and rotary mowers and large spray equipment, hand tools, weedeater and edger, greens roller, and a tractor with related attachments. Effective communication skills, written and verbal. Able to lead and prioritize the work of a small group of employees to perform a variety of turfgrass maintenance tasks. Ability to do physically demanding work for extended periods of time in a variety of environmental conditions. A Pesticide Registered Technician’s License is required within one year of hire into the position. Must be at least 19 years old and possess a valid driver’s license for a minimum of 24 consecutive months.
