JOB SUMMARY

The Sport Clubs Manager is responsible for the strategic direction, administration and management of the Associated Students Sport Club Program including the Sport Clubs Department, Sport Clubs Athletic Training Program, Sport Clubs Council, Special Events and the Matador Sports Network. This position supervises a department with four full time employees – Sport Clubs Senior Coordinator, Sport Clubs Head Athletic Trainer, Sport Clubs Coordinator, Sport Clubs Athletic Trainer, 20+ part time non-student employee coaches, 35+ student employees and numerous volunteers. This position requires a thorough understanding of Sport Club policies and best practices within the CSU and across the nation to strategically move the program forward.  The Sport Clubs Manager will maintain and update the operating procedures and risk management for sport clubs in compliance with current policies, procedures, laws and executive orders. The position will oversee and direct the human resources of the department, develop and maintain the budget of the program and the Sport Club Council. Incumbents must have the ability to create lasting partnerships with various campus entities, alumni and individuals and entities outside the CSUN community. Incumbents need to have the ability to perform a wide variety of professional services and responsibilities, including long term planning, conflict resolution, direct marketing for the program, negotiating internal and external agreements, must have the ability to comfortably speak to large audiences, must oversee a dynamic schedule of events, manage numerous staff positions, complete academic eligibility verification, forecast and manage budgets, assist with recruitment and admissions, administer student travel and do so without direct supervision in an unpredictable and rapidly changing environment. Reporting to the Director of Student Engagement & Services, will ensure programming aligns with Sport Clubs, Associated Students and University goals and priorities.

The Sport Clubs Manager's duties include, but are not limited to:

General: Direct and manage the Associated Students Sport Clubs Program including the Sport Clubs Department, Sport Club Athletic Training Program, Sport Clubs Council, Special Events and Matador Sports Network. Supervise the Sport Clubs Manager, Head Athletic Trainer, Athletic Trainer, Sport Clubs Coordinator, 20+ Sport Club Coach employees, 30+ Sport Club Volunteer Coaches, Sport Club Council Executives and Sport Club Officers from 30 university-recognized organizations. Direct the short-term and long range development and implementation of the Sport Clubs Program. Work to retain current members and attract new members to the department through effective programming, marketing of events and games and recruitment of students to the university.

Administrative: Analyze program needs through monitoring sport club attendance reports, budget reports and travel itineraries. Monitors team activity, registration and communication within the DoSportsRec software. Meets with the Sport Clubs Council Executive Board weekly, Sport Clubs Council bimonthly, and meets with individual club presidents on a monthly basis. Completes eligibility and enrollment verifications and assist with athlete admissions. Advises and supervises conflict resolution meetings within clubs, and among players, coaches and volunteers. Ensures all club recognition documents are turned in, to maintain University Recognition. Directly evaluate and sanction individuals or club as necessary for violations of the Student Code of Conduct and the Sport Clubs Handbook. Ensures the weekly sport clubs practice, game, event and travel schedules are complete. Supervise tournaments (local, regional and national) and youth camp programming when needed. Compiles and distributes the Sport Club Annual Report.

Biannually review and revise documents pertaining to the operation of the department and advise/communicate with the Matador Involvement Center, the University Student Union, the Department of Health and Human Development, Intercollegiate Athletics, Admissions and Records, University Advancement, Alumni Association, and any other campus entities on how changes in policy will impact the Sport Clubs Program.

Ensure all policies are being followed and create and develop new Sport Clubs Policies and Procedures to maintain consistency with campus policies, directives and CSU policies and executive orders for sport clubs. Institute the best practices set by the National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association. Assess and review policies to recommend revisions to the Sport Clubs Handbook. 

Develops new and maintains current collaborative relationships with the following entities: all Associated Students departments, Student Recreation Center, Office of Student Involvement and Development, the Matador Involvement Center staff, University Student Union, Department of Health and Human Development, Recreation and Tourism Management, Kinesiology, Intercollegiate Athletics, University Police Services, Alumni Association, Office of Development, Student Health Center, Risk Management and other departments as necessary in a manner that supports the integration and mission of Associated Students.

Maintain effective communication with other CSU and local UC and private school Sport Club administrators and Recreational Sports Departments.  Keep informed and communicate when necessary with the 25+ sport club national governing bodies.
