This is an overtime-eligible position on the Olympia campus of The Evergreen State College. This is a cyclic position scheduled to work full-time from August through May and half-time June and July each year. This position is exempt from Washington State Civil Service rules.
This position is responsible for managing sports information for Evergreen’s intercollegiate athletics program, including the athletics website, pre-game, in-game, and season statistics, as well as general marketing and promotional materials. The incumbent serves as the institutional liaison to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (
NAIA
) and the Cascade Collegiate Conference (
CCC
) and works collaboratively with other Sports Information Directors (SIDs) at fellow institutions. Additionally, the position is the primary steward of athletics statistical records for the institution and works with the Marketing and Communication team to promote Evergreen Athletics and support public relations of the college.
This position reports to the Assistant Director for Intercollegiate Athletics and is part of the Recreation and Athletics Administrative Team. The position supports the overall success of the intercollegiate athletics program and the larger division of Student Affairs by promoting Evergreen’s athletic programs, fostering success in competition, and creating a positive college experience for student-athletes academically, athletically, and socially.
The incumbent must not only foster positive relationships among the athletics staff, but also work well with local and national media partners, Marketing and Communications staff, and Advancement staff to showcase student athletes and Evergreen Athletics to generate interest in attending and/or supporting the college.
Manage sports information for Evergreen’s Intercollegiate Athletics, which include Men’s & Women’s Soccer, Men’s & Women’s Basketball, Men’s & Women’s Wrestling, Men’s & Women’s Track & Field, and Men’s & Women’s Cross-Country, and Women’s Volleyball.
Develop relationships with
CCC
and
NAIA
colleagues and media both locally and nationally to enhance coverage of Evergreen Athletic programs and events.
Maintain active membership in CoSIDA and

Write weekly press releases summarizing contest information and highlighting accomplishments of student athletes.
Nominate student athletes for honors including weekly

Develop regular promotional materials, including posters, media guides, printed programs, and brochures to increase program and student athlete visibility.
Maintain content on athletics website using

Sports platform, ensuring information is accurate and up to date.
Provide programs with current rosters for home contests and create public address scripts.
Oversee Game Management, including ensuring designated space for other SIDs/media coverage, that all positions at scorer’s table are filled, and maintain a professional and impartial work environment.
Responsible for live game day web streaming broadcasts and ensuring game film is uploaded correctly and in a timely manner.
Track and report statistics for all home contests and print box scores for coaches immediately following game. Report scores on school and conference websites, upload game action photos for use in game recap, and update cumulative stats and maintain school records.
Write and post game recap to school and conference websites and share with current media list.
Work with Marketing and Communications staff to coordinate brand management and ensure publications and social media posts are consistent with the overall branding design of the College.
Assist with graphics, logos, and publication creation as needed within the department.
Develop a marketing and promotion plan, on and off campus, of all upcoming Evergreen sports events, special events, and newsworthy stories to generate interest in Evergreen and the athletics program.
Utilize a variety of platforms to disseminate information during games to fans, such as updating the website and posting to social media, including Twitter and Facebook.
Develop positive relationships with local media who cover or may cover Evergreen sports and on-campus colleagues in Marketing and Communications, campus newspaper, radio station, Photo Services, Print Shop, Media Loan, etc.
Contribute to the overall fundraising mission of the Student Wellness, Recreation, & Athletics Department by working cooperatively with the Assistant Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and others on all departmental development and sales initiatives, including the creation of standard and custom sponsorship packets as assigned.
Develop promotional materials for summer youth camps sponsored by the department with the goal of quality and consistency in the publications.
Work with each sport coach to develop recruitment packets for each that contain comprehensive view of the College for potential student-athletes and which create a unified theme for presenting the athletics programs to the outside community.

Ability to track official statistics for each sport.
Skill and ability in sports marketing and promotional plans and information distribution, including writing for and utilizing social media, developing website content, live feeds, and uploads and publication materials, such as brochures and programs.
Extensive knowledge of each sport (soccer, volleyball, wrestling, cross-country, basketball, and outdoor track and field), including rules, terminology, schedules, etc.
Ability to communicate respectfully and work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and foster a climate of equity and belonging.
Ability to collect and present data, including student-athlete biographical data and statistical information.
Skill in and ability to work efficiently and meet deadlines.
Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.
Ability to work collaboratively and effectively as an integral member of the Student Wellness, Recreation, & Athletics staff in planning and decision-making processes, and with a diverse community of students, faculty, staff, and public.
Skill and ability in a wide variety of computer programs and media platforms, including Microsoft Office, social media, web management programs, publishing software, etc.
Ability to learn, utilize, and teach others to use new technology/equipment as needed.
Knowledge of
FERPA
and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
Ability to climb step stools and reach for things in front of body and lift boxes weighing up to 40 pounds.
Ability to work outdoors with exposure to weather conditions, including rain, heat, and cold and in indoors environments that may include dust, noise, environmentally approved disinfectant fumes, and odors associated athletic facilities.
Ability to travel for occasional trips to other schools/facilities.
Ability to work before, during, and after all home games which occur during the day, as well as on evenings and weekends.
Bachelor’s degree (preferably in Sports Administration, Communications, Journalism, or a related field).
Two years of experience in sports communication and as a statistician.
Two years of experience in writing, web design, or public relations.
Two years of experience in a professional sports communication role in a college or university.
Experience working with various media platforms.
Must provide proof of identity and employment eligibility within three days of beginning work.
This position is part of a bargaining unit and covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant’s suitability and competence to perform in the position.
