The Sports Turf Technician performs activities to ensure readiness and safety of fields/turf or athletic events such as preparing, fertilizing, seeding and caring for athletic fields and turf fields. This position operates medium and heavy-duty equipment, while working with a comprehensive knowledge of field/turf maintenance and NCAA regulations for marking athletic fields.

- Prepares playing fields and ensures their readiness and safety for athletic events. - Performs layout and marking of playing surfaces in accordance with NCAA requirements. - Measures, mixes and applies fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides on athletic fields. - Operates and performs minor repairs to irrigation system on athletic fields. - Operates and maintains equipment including tractors, front-end loaders, turf sprayers, spreaders and mowers to maintain athletic fields.

Qualifications and Skills
- High School Diploma or GED. - Three years in maintenance of academic or professional sport fields and/or golf courses to include three years in the operation of commercial or industrial-sized grounds care equipment.
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
Extensive knowledge of all aspects of athletic field maintenance, including, but not limited to, growing characteristics, warm and cool season greases, recognition of and appropriate treatment of diseases, pests and weeds, technical equipment and NCAA requirements for layout and lining of playing surfaces. Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations; to follow oral and written instructions; to communicate effectively; to operate and perform minor maintenance on assigned tools and equipment; to perform physical work requiring bending, stooping, reaching, carrying, heavy lifting; to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.
This is an Essential Position and may also be placed in on-call status. Possible nights and weekends, depending on athletic event schedule.
Candidates selected for employment may be subject to medical inquiries and/or medical examinations to determine ability to perform the job. Valid Maryland Non-commercial Class C or equivalent driver's license is required. Candidates selected for employment will be required to take additional training not limited to Ladder Training, confined spaces, heat stress and asbestos training.
Salary and Benefits
$46,736 annually and full University benefits that includes annual leave, up to 15 holidays, personal and sick days; excellent health, life, and retirement plans; and tuition remission. When applicable, a 2.5% increase may be added to the annual salary, pending successful completion of the initial six-month probationary period, for this position.
