Summary

Responsibilities*

Essential Functions:

Design, implement, supervise, and monitor all facets of strength and conditioning programs for assigned teams, to include:

• Periodized Annual Plans.
• Sport specific resistance training programs.
• Sport specific conditioning programs.
• Individual programs as necessitated.
• Conduct fitness testing, computation of results, and evaluation.
• Collaboration with fellow Student-Athlete Health and Welfare teammates and sport coaching personnel to monitor, assess and develop protocols for training loads, neuromuscular fatigue, recovery, athlete readiness, and other performance factors.
• Provide written and verbal reports to fellow Student-Athlete Health and Welfare teammates and coaching personnel as needed.
• Instruct proper lifting technique and assist in spotting when necessary.
• Effectively and properly motivate athletes to achieve maximum potential in all areas of performance.
• Anticipate potential risks of injury and have the ability to implement emergency medical procedures.
• Assist with the research and procurement of new strength & conditioning equipment, as well as ensure the repair and replacement of existing strength & conditioning equipment in strength & conditioning facilities.
• Assist with the research and determination of current and future needs within strength & conditioning department, and then create detailed proposals of such for administration.
• Assist in the establishment and maintenance of an in-service education program pertaining to sport science related issues not only for Olympic Sports strength & conditioning team, but for other athletic medicine personnel, administration, and athletes as well.
• Assist with the establishment and maintenance of a professional development program to include requirements of relevant certification for all team members.
• Assist in the recruitment, retention and hiring of highly qualified and competent strength & conditioning team members at all levels.
• Conduct and assist in presentations to visiting coaches and camps.
• Assist the Director of Olympic Sports Strength and Conditioning with all tasks for which he/she is responsible.
• Establish and maintain positive working relationships with fellow strength & conditioning teammates, athletic administration, fellow Student-Athlete Health and Welfare teammates and sport coaching personnel.
• Maintain all required strength & conditioning certifications and memberships.
• Maintain current CPR/AED certifications.
• Anticipate potential safety risks, take measures to remove them, and in the event of an injury, and have the ability to implement emergency medical procedures.
• Represent the University of Michigan and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at international, national, regional, state and University conferences/meetings as assigned.
• Participate in special projects, committees, or other initiatives as assigned.
• Assist with regular updates to athletic department personnel as to the current Industry's Professional Standards and Guidelines.
• Always provide a high level of customer service and communications to all entities.
• Adhere to and implement industry accepted, scientifically supported methodologies for all varsity athletic programs. Methods must be tested and properly implemented into the overall training plan for each athlete.
• Establish and maintain collaborative alliances with multiple stakeholders at the University of Michigan.
• Use technology and social media to foster an effective and efficient overall experience for student-athletes and department team members.
• Assist with special projects as assigned regarding donor and student-athlete support.
• Contribute to the development of an environment for team members and student-athletes that is healthy, safe, equitable, and culturally diverse.
• Adhere to the Code of Ethics and credentialing requirements of the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA) and other credentialing organizations and the State of Michigan.
• Ensure adherence to all policies and procedures as defined by the NCAA, Big 10 Conference, University of Michigan, and University of Michigan Department of Athletics

Supervisory Responsibilities:

• Supervision and education of strength and conditioning personnel as assigned.
• Supervision and education of assigned students enrolled in clinical internships within the University and professional interns / residents as assigned.
• Supervision and education of other Student-Athlete Health & Welfare personnel as assigned.
  

Travel:

• Equitably travel with assigned teams as needed and/or directed. This travel should in no way interfere with your responsibilities with your other team(s). If travel is warranted, you will ensure that all other responsibilities are accounted for beforehand.

Required Qualifications*

• Bachelor's Degree in exercise science, sports administration, or other sports/exercise related field.
• Master's Degree in exercise science, sports administration, or other sports/exercise related field
  • At least one of the above degrees must be in an exercise science related field.
• Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist - National Strength and Conditioning Association and or Strength & Conditioning Coach Certified - Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association.
• USA Weightlifting Level 1 Coach / Sport Performance Coach (or equivalent: Totten Training Systems, UKSCA, BAWLA) or must obtain USA Weightlifting Level 1 Coach Certification within a year of employment.
• CPR / AED and First Aid Certification by the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, National Safety Council, and/or other recognized credentialing agency.
• Minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience with the primary job responsibility of Strength and Conditioning Coach.
• Compliance and understanding of Big Ten Conference and NCAA rules.
• Ability to meet continuing education requirements as established by the National Strength and Conditioning Association and/or the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association.
• Ability to follow policies and procedures set forth by the University of Michigan and the University of Michigan Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
• Supervisory experience.
• Strong communication (written and verbal), organizational and interpersonal skills.
• Must be able to establish and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, coaches, student-athletes, physicians, and other allied health personnel.
• Must possess problem-solving and critical thinking skills, innovation and creativity, adaptability, initiative, and stress tolerance to various situations.
• Must provide a high level of customer service.
• Ability to work long hours, including early mornings, late nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, non-traditional work hours, extended periods of time without days off, travel, and be on-call as a regular part of the position.
• Proven ability to multi-task, work independently, prioritize, and complete tasks in a timely manner.
• Demonstrated track record creating positive, high-energy, productive, and supportive working relationships with student athletes, coaches, fellow strength and conditioning and Student-Athlete Health and Welfare colleagues.
• Ability to lift objects in excess of 140lbs, stand for extended periods, work in various environmental conditions, and assist injured individuals on / off playing surfaces.
• Demonstrated administrative proficiency to include report/proposal preparation.
• Ability to champion a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
• Commitment to promote an atmosphere of compliance and adherence to NCAA, Big Ten Conference, University and departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
• Must complete and pass a background check.

• Registered Strength & Conditioning Coach w/Distinction - National Strength and Conditioning Association.
• Accredited Strength & Conditioning Coach - United Kingdom Strength and Conditioning Association.
• Strength & Conditioning Coach Certified - Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association.
• Previous experience in a sports science capacity.
• Published and presented on sports science/strength and conditioning relevant topics.
• Verifiable experience utilizing a variety of monitoring/testing technology.
• Verifiable experience with establishing and conducting performance/fitness/fatigue monitoring programs.
