The Strength and Performance Coach is responsible for developing and implementing year-round strength and conditioning programs for the University's 13 intercollegiate athletic teams that will instruct student-athletes on the proper physical, mental, spiritual, and academic development for optimal athletic performance. This position coordinates and manages the campus fitness areas (Alumni Athletics & Convocation Center -AA&CC, The Park) that are available for use to student athletes, students, faculty, and staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Designs and implements strength training and conditioning programs in-season, off-season, and pre-season athletic programs in coordination with sports medicine, nutrition, and student counseling.
Identifies and conducts tests to evaluate performance, working with sports medicine to reduce injury risk. Develops systems for tracking athlete attendance and progress. Supervises injured athletes' rehabilitation programs.
Collaborates with sport coaches to ensure programming and goals are applicable to individual student-athlete; conducts needs-analysis, collects analytical data, monitors progress, and provides feedback to student-athletes and coaches.
Teaches proper safe weight lifting techniques and motivating student-athletes to reach their potential.
Designs, implements, and manages fitness and wellness programs for the St. Mary's community that include use of fitness areas, group exercise, personal training, and special event programming. Creates marketing campaigns to increase participation in fitness and wellness activities. Assesses effectiveness and satisfaction of programs, services and facilities.
Maintains a welcoming environment, educating St. Mary's community members on the use of the facilities, instruct on proper techniques and appropriate use of equipment.
Establishes facility schedules to incorporate sport teams, small groups, and individual sessions as well as general use. Communicates the programmatic offerings of Strength and Conditioning programs to prospective student-athletes and employees.
Manages the strength and conditioning facilities to ensure high standards of maintenance and cleanliness.
Provides organization, oversight and management, including customer service, for scheduled events, including pre-event preparation, on-site administration, and post-event follow-up.
Coordinates fitness/wellness personal trainers, and group fitness instructors.
Researches and analyzes new trends, philosophies and techniques in the areas of strength training, conditioning and flexibility practices, as well as new equipment in the strength and conditioning field.
Prepares regular written communication such as mid-year and annual reports to include financial and participation reports, and equipment inventory reports; maintains updated facility and program staff manuals.
Maintains compliance with NCAA, the Conference, National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), and University rules, regulations and best practices.
Hires, mentors, and supervises student staff.
Serves on University committees as appropriate and attends all office, staff and department meetings as scheduled.
Performs other duties as required.
MINMImMiiadsfa** QUALIFICATIONS:**
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required, preferably in areas of Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Physical Education or related field; Master's degree in related fields preferred.
Two (2) years of demonstrated experience in strength and conditioning or similar experience, preferably in a university or scholastic setting
Must have professional certification such as Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified (SCCC), or equivalent certification.
CPR/AED and First Aid certification preferred or able to obtain within 30 days of employment.
Must clear and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance
Must maintain a valid driver's license, motor vehicle liability insurance and personal injury insurance, and be able to complete the University Van Driver Training within 90 days of employment date.
Must be able to work flexible hours including sporting and non-sporting events that may occur on early morning, weeknights, weekends, and possibly holidays; Occasional travel may be required
Must have the ability to demonstrate intermediate skills in MS Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook); Teams, Zoom or other virtual platform.
Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong public relations and customer service skills with an ability to implement diplomacy and discretion at all times; an ability to work effectively with communities across the university.
Must have a high ethical standards and a strong sense of confidentiality; ability to prioritize and manage multiple deadlines; thrive in a complex work environment; displays solid problem solving and interpersonal skills; works well independently and as part of a team.
Must have strong self-judgment abilities to assist in the preparation of department personnel policy information. Use discretion to complete work assignments. Initiative is frequently required to complete work assignments. Decisions are made regarding policy interpretation and individual work priorities.
Must have a high attention to detail and be able to organize workflow, coordinate activities, balance simultaneous projects without loss of efficiency in a multi-tasked environment, and manage multiple priorities to meet deadlines.
Leadership and supervisory abilities, specifically able to supervise student staff.
Knowledge of standard practices in campus recreation and/or sports team training.
Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff and students from a variety of diverse backgrounds.
Understanding of the NCAA Division II intercollegiate athletic programs
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Working conditions are in an office environment and university campus setting. Must be able to move across the university campus to conduct day to day business.
While performing this role, the employee work outdoors when they work at athletic fields, sporting events, practices, or job sites; work indoors in a gym or other athletic facility, and are exposed to blood, disease and infections on a daily basis when working with athletes.
While performing this role, the employee will be regularly required to sit, walk, and stand; talk and hear, both in person and by telephone; and use hands repetitively to operate standard office equipment; and occasionally required to lift up to 100+ pounds.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to extreme heat or cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme heat, and risk of electrical shock. May be exposed to loud and distracting sounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Frequently communicates with others using approved technological resources; must be able to exchange accurate information through designated systems within a timely manner.
Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery.
