Student Assistant - Athletic Academic Tutor
This is a student position responsible for providing academic services through tutoring assigned student-athletes individually and in small groups. Works under close supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Provides academic services through tutoring or mentoring assigned student-athletes.
Meets with student-athlete(s) on a scheduled basis to review, discuss, and/or explain materials covered in class.
Offers assistance with developing study strategies.
Works with the student-athlete to develop a tutoring plan that fits the student-athlete’s individual needs.
Prepares and organizes tutoring sessions to ensure the student-athlete’s academic development.
Assesses the student-athlete’s progress throughout tutoring sessions and completes tutor reports at the conclusion of each tutoring session as required.
Assists in organizing course materials and tasks as assigned.
Reports any necessary information to academic services staff when appropriate.
Participates in tutor training and developmental education.
Adheres to all applicable
NCAA
, conference, and university rules, regulations, and policies.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Ability to conceptualize and convey information covered in classes with patience and consistency.
Ability to identify and utilize appropriate motivators when meeting with student-athletes.
Ability to communicate professionally and courteously to university faculty and staff, students, and the general public.
Ability to maintain flexible hours including evenings and/or weekends as necessary.
The minimum education required for admittance as a student at Stephen F. Austin State University.
A minimum of 30 credit hours must be earned prior to employment. Tutors must have completed course or a higher level course in the same subject area with a grade of B or better at
SFA
in order to tutor on the subject.
No direct tutoring experience is required. Training and instruction will be provided.
A student must be enrolled in six or more semester hours to be eligible for student employment during the fall or spring semesters. To be eligible for student employment during the summer, a student must be enrolled in three or more semester hours or be registered for courses in the upcoming fall semester.
Student assistants may not hold any other type of position such as a graduate assistantship or temporary casual employment at the same time that they are employed as a student assistant.
