Position Details
Sports Facilities is responsible for the management of all athletic/sports facilities at Montana State University including the 9,300 seat Brick Breeden Fieldhouse, the 17,000 seat Bobcat Stadium, Shroyer Gymnasium, the Bobcat Tennis Center, and all athletic fields. These facilities are multi-purpose and meet the varied needs of the campus and the community. The department provides services for Athletics, Campus Recreation, and Health and Human Development, as well as hosting many events/concerts that come to campus.
Reporting to the Associate Director-Internal Operations of Sports Facilities, the Technical Director serves as part of the management team and is responsible for the acquisition and management of personnel, equipment and supplies related to technical operations and advancement of all athletic events, concerts, and other special events/shows that occur within the MSU sports facilities. Oversees and manages all equipment and activities related to use of technology for events/concerts, MSU department meetings, athletic contests, etc. Maintains inventory control. Manages, maintains, and repairs departmental technical, A/V, scoreboards, lighting equipment, and other miscellaneous related equipment. Researches industry innovations and forecasts needs of departmental equipment systems. Recommends and implements systems improvements and acquires new equipment. Troubleshoots and solves technical issues for clients. Conducts training as needed for end-users. Advances production of all concerts/events with the artists and their production teams (schedule load-ins, technical rehearsals, etc.) Directly works with campus constituents and other potential clients to best meet the client’s technical needs (lighting, audio visual, computer, room set-up design etc.) Supervises (hire, schedule, train etc) work crews consisting of full-time, part-time, contracted, volunteer, and student staff of 3-60 dependent on show/event. Actively participates during set-up and tear-down of athletic events, concerts/shows, and meeting room set-ups and turn-a-rounds for all other types of events. May occasionally serve as Event Manager for events and activities ranging from NCAA athletic contests, concerts, trade shows, and meetings. Works as part of the management team on short and long range planning. Primary liaison with University Information Technology, Auxiliary Services IT, and off campus A/V vendors. And actively participates as part of the team while performing other duties in support of the department’s mission.
Bachelor’s degree or certification(s) in electrical, information technology, engineering, technical theater or related fields plus progressively responsible experience in a technical related job working with operating, repairing, and maintaining electrical/electronics, mechanized, audio visual and/or telecom equipment or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience. Experience in problem solving/troubleshooting and repair of electrical/electronics and mechanized systems. Practical experience with sound and lighting for events.
Experience with intercollegiate athletic events. Experience in technical and/or event management/production including advancing shows. Leadership/Supervisory experience. Demonstrate general knowledge and understanding of theatrical/arena rigging, stage building, telephone/internet support, show power, electrical work, exhibition show sets, meeting room functions and stadium events.
Exude enthusiasm and have a high level of integrity and customer orientation while interacting with a wide range of individuals from staff to coaches to artists and vendors. Sensitive to the needs of clients and have an extensive knowledge of customer service. Maintain current industry knowledge of technical equipment and trends. Maintain composure while working with a broad spectrum of personalities under stress, pressure, and time sensitive demands of the job. Have strong computer skills including but not limited to knowledge of Microsoft Office Products, graphics programs, audio editing programs, and scheduling software. Possess solid problem solving skills. Exhibit leadership and team building skills. Be self-motivated, adapt to frequently changing priorities, and able to organize and prioritize multiple work assignments and meet deadlines. Exercise good judgment and make consistent decisions. Be able to operate and maintain departmental equipment (i.e. forklifts, man-lifts, a wide range of hand tools and electronic instruments, other mechanized equipment, audio visual, and office equipment). Exhibit working knowledge of production scheduling, lighting, video, sound, staging, rigging, design elements, computer skills, and Daktronics scoreboards & video boards. Represent Sports Facilities and its programs in a positive, professional courteous manner.

Will work outside and in inclement weather.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodations. The requirements listed above are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Move about or remain stationary while working for long periods of time. Move/transport items up to 75 lbs, and occasionally up to 100 lbs. Push, pull, move up and down stairs, and maneuver through tight spaces. Work at heights. Wear safety gear as required. Occasionally shovel snow.
