Job Description

TheUniversity Athletic and Community Counselor is responsible for providing direct and indirect professional, confidential assessment, diagnostic, and clinical mental health, including individual and group counseling, and crisis intervention services to ISU student-athletes and community-based clients.

Direct services include treatment for the full range of mental health issues. Treatment modalities include individual and group counseling. Indirect services include case management, supervision, consultation, and serving as liaison between the ISU Interdisciplinary Clinic and the Department of Counseling, and ISU’s Athletics Department.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide direct clinical services to clients through crisis intervention, safety assessments, and coordination of emergency interventions and resources.
• Collaborate and consult with behavioral/mental health, psychiatric and medical providers, and other Health Service providers and community to best manage clinical caseload and ensure effective treatment.
• Documentation of clinical services.
• Provide crisis intervention and triage coverage/consultation to students and other members of the university community.
• Participate in rotating after hours on call service as needed.
• Manage CARE reports.
• Maintain electronic medical and other records, including registries for high-risk clients/patients.
• Collaborates in efforts to provide services in new and creative ways.
• Design and conduct developmental and outreach activities related to the needs of student-athletes and the Athletics department.
• Adhere to NCAA and/or agency standards regarding case management, documentation, and parameters of service, including occasional availability for emergency response or outreach during non-traditional hours of operation.
• Marketing counseling services (individual, group, couple, and family clinical rehabilitation).
• Facilitate community partnerships.
• Oversee the collection of revenue generated from counseling services.
• Establish clientele and generate revenue to assist with a self-sustaining clinic.
• Supervise counseling interns.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Performance enhancement consultation and services:

• Consult high-performance teams, coaching staff, and student-athletes regarding sports performance.
• Collaborate with student-athletes.
• Develop and provide programming and training for student-athletes, coaches, and staff.
• Conduct outreach and workshops on performance enhancement.
• Consult and engage with established athletics mental health resilience programs.
• Provide education and training to student-athletes and Athletics staff regarding athlete mental health.
• Periodically attend sports practices and home events.
• Conduct periodic needs assessments.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree from a CACREP-accredited counseling program in either: Clinical Mental Health Counseling; Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling, or Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling; or Master's in Social Work; or Clinical Psychologist

Preferred Qualifications

• Three years or more experience as a licensed practitioner.
• Experience working with college students or adolescent clients.
• Experience working with athletes.
