Position Overview:
The Vice President and Director of Athletics will serve as the key leader of Butler Athletics, representing the program to the community, campus, and Board of Trustees. Reporting to the President of the University and serving on the President’s Cabinet, the Vice President and Director of Athletics will be responsible for overseeing and advancing the university’s intercollegiate athletics program while elevating the brand of Butler University. The position requires a commitment to the shared values of the University which are excellence, collaboration, integrity, transformation, and equity. Also, this position is committed to the core values of integrity and sportsmanship in athletics, encapsulated in the Butler Way which demands commitment, denies selfishness, accepts reality, yet seeks improvement everyday while putting the team above self. The Vice President and Director of Athletics will represent Butler Athletics on the conference and national levels and be a leading voice in the evolving landscape of intercollegiate athletics.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Develop and implement comprehensive strategies for the university’s Department of Athletics.
Create a culture of respect, inclusiveness, teamwork and excellence throughout the Department of Athletics.
Ensure operational and staff compliance with institutional, Big East Conference and Pioneer Conference, NCAA, and state and federal laws and Title IX regulations, guidelines, and requirements.
Ensure a strong commitment to student-athlete welfare and the student-athlete experience, prioritizing the academic success, mental health and personal development of student-athletes.
Partner with all internal and external departments, including campus units, to achieve stated goals.
Work closely with the Provost, Deans, and faculty to further integrate Athletics and student-athletes in the university community.
Manage budget, finance, academic, compliance and facilities to best support athletics programs.
Focus on all external functions of the Department including fundraising, brand management, ticket sales, sponsorship, media, and marketing.
Elevate the national brand of Butler University through comprehensive athletics’ excellence.
Serve as the primary spokesperson for Butler Athletics, actively engaging media outlets to tell the stories of our athletics department.
Encourage community engagement and service among student-athletes.
Be a conference and national leader on committees and in discussions in the ever-evolving landscape of intercollegiate athletics.
Encourage professional and career development of staff members.
Utilize data and analytics to enhance the work of student-athletes, coaches and staff.
Lead the Department’s Name, Image & Likeness (NIL) efforts within NCAA and state guidelines.
Qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree is required with a master’s degree strongly preferred.
Experience with budgets, facilities, operations, personnel, academics, compliance, external relations and student-athlete development.
Knowledge and experience in NCAA rules, sports administration, NIL, transfer portal, conference realignment, and student-athlete welfare,
Six years of experience within a NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics program or similar work experience.
Demonstrated success in revenue generation for Athletics.
Demonstrated ability to articulate a vision, address gaps, develop a strategy and implement.
Demonstrated planning and assessment skills.
Demonstrated record of success in improving the management, quality, operations, and customer service within a major division of an institution.
Excellent leadership, collaboration, and organizational skills.
High integrity and ethical standards.
Commitment to the principles of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives.
