Loyola Marymount University, a top-ranked Catholic, Jesuit, and Marymount institution in Los Angeles, seeks a deeply seasoned, creative, and nimble Vice President (VP) for Communications and Public Relations. Reporting to the Senior Vice President (SVP) for Marketing, Communications, and External Relations, the Vice President oversees an inclusive, integrated, interdisciplinary, and proactive communications and public relations unit that generates high-quality content for all university channels and proactively advances a consistent, beneficial, and elevated public image of the institution. Leading a matrixed organization of 33 staff, the Vice President will lead teams with responsibility for academic communications, advancement communications, athletics communications and media relations, internal communications, public and media relations, and LMU Loyola Law School communications and marketing. As the University’s senior spokesperson, the VP will manage high risk or high impact issues with the news media and press and will write, review, edit, and approve the University’s most visible strategic communications, press releases, talking points, statements, publications, and channel content.
The successful candidate for the Vice President for Communications and Public Relations is an accomplished communications and public affairs professional with progressive leadership experience in higher education, non-profit, or other comparable business setting, with an understanding of the unique aspects of a higher education environment. They will demonstrate experience creating and managing a comprehensive, integrated communications and public relations strategy for internal and external constituencies in a complex and high stakes environment. They will have expertise in a complex communications ecosystem and will demonstrate superior oral and written communication skills.
The next VP will have a minimum of 10 years of related communications and/or public relations experience in positions of increasing responsibility, preferably within higher education with a minimum of 5 years of experience in a senior leadership role with a hands-on collaborative style with cross-disciplinary direct reports and/or teams. A Master’s degree, ideally with a specialization in communications, journalism, and/or business management or related fields and Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) or equivalent training in public relations practices preferred.
