) Jackrabbit Athletics is looking for our next Western Equestrian Coach. In this role, you will be responsible for the operation and management of the western equestrian program including coaching intercollegiate riding teams, recruiting prospective student-athletes, administrative duties, public relations and fund-raising duties as necessary. The western coach will report to the head equestrian coach who is responsible for the entirety of the Equestrian Program. South Dakota State is an

competes in The Summit League for all sports except football (Missouri Valley Football Conference), wrestling (Big

Conference), and women’s equestrian (National Collegiate Equestrian Association). This is a 12-month, full-time, benefits-eligible position.

KEY
RESPONSIBILITIES
:
Recruitment of Student-Athletes:
Evaluate and recruit prospective athletes through communication, visits, and official/unofficial visits.
Maintain accurate recruiting records and contact logs.
Supervise and Develop Student-Athletes (daily practice coaching):
Work with Head Coach to set goals for program and student-athletes to accomplish goals.
Instruct intercollegiate athletes in the sport of equestrian (riding skill and competition experience).
Assist with monitoring daily class attendance/counsel and discipline student-athletes as needed.
Ensure safety of student-athletes and academic progress.
Administrative and Public Relations (assist Head Coach with the following):
Coordinate contest schedules, team travel, and home event arrangements.
Attend meetings, visit with walk-in visitors, communicate with vendors and prepare reports as necessary
Assist with fundraising.
Oversee daily Facility Operations (according to Head Coach and Director of Operations policies):
Assist with the supervision and duties of student employees in the care of the horses and tasks performing.
Assist with daily horse care, barn chores as needed.
Communicate with Head Coach and Director of Equestrian Operations regarding horse and student athlete health and safety.

MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
:
Bachelor’s degree completed by appointment date.
Coaching or riding instructor experience OR competitive riding and/or collegiate riding experience – any combination to make 1 year.
Commitment to promote an atmosphere of compliance to institutional, varsity equestrian, and
NCAA
rules and regulations.
PREFERRED
QUALIFICATIONS
:
Demonstrated collegiate coaching and knowledge of Western coaching or riding instructor experience (Western horsemanship and reigning) at collegiate level;
Ability to recruit student-athletes; and
Knowledge of budget management and supervision.
