JOB SUMMARY

This position oversees all aspects of the Rodeo program at Northeastern State University and is responsible for building and leading a competitive NIRA rodeo program.  This position is classified as a 12-month full-time at-will employment appointment with administrative (30%) and coaching (teaching) (70%) responsibilities. 

MAJOR DUTIES

Provide overall management and leadership of the men's and women's rodeo program by providing quality coaching and instruction to students participating in the program; enforce safety regulations and procedures through supervision of students; 
Plans, directs, and coaches an intercollegiate men's and women's rodeo program; develops student-athletes to their fullest potential while being regionally competitive and ethically run; ensures NIRA rules and regulations compliance; 
Recruits rodeo team members who have the ability to achieve academic and athletic success and assists them in meeting individual and team goals; 
Supervises and coordinates rodeo events and activities, including attending scheduled rodeo practices, classes, and NIRA region rodeos and College National Finals Rodeo; coordinates and ensures rodeo stock and arena are well maintained; 
Provides ongoing oversight of student athletes' conduct both in and out of the arena, including support of the Athletic Code of Conduct; assists with conflict resolution; 
Develops and manages the rodeo program annual budget, monitors expenditures, including allocation of scholarships, completes all documentation requirements, manages the rodeo program financial affairs effectively and innovatively within the constraints of the approved budget; 
Develops fundraising programs in conjunction with the athletic director, development office, and the NSU Foundation to meet program needs, goals, and objectives; 
Works to schedule events, travel, and develop an event management plan for home rodeos; Provides information to the Sports Information Office for press releases, season previews, hometown news articles, and feature stories to various media in compliance with the college's and the NIRA's policies and procedures;

Be an advocate of the college; endeavor to enhance its image and strengthen its role in providing programs and services to students and the community; this includes activities involved with recruiting and retaining students; 
Maintain rodeo equipment and an inventory of Rodeo Equipment
Prepare, manage, and organize Rodeo team travel, pickups, trailers, horses, lodging accommodations, meals, scheduling, practices, and competition preparation; 
Purchase timed event stock with guidance from the budget office - feed, brand, vaccines; Purchase and sell livestock with guidance from the budget office - feed, hay, and grain; Performs additional duties as assigned. 
Leads the recruitment of prospective student-athletes who align with the academic and competitive goals of NSU. 
Coordinates with internal departments, including Strength and Conditioning, Athletic Training, and Academic Support, to promote student-athlete well-being and success. 
Works closely with Compliance and Financial Aid offices to administer and manage athletic 
scholarships. 
Oversees the rodeo budget and equipment purchasing in coordination with the Sr. Associate AD of Internal Operations and Director of Athletics. 
Implements academic support initiatives and monitors student-athlete academic progress in alignment with NIRA and university standards. 
Provides regular performance feedback and mentorship to student-athletes. 
Supports athletics communications and media requests and participates in promotional events, alumni functions, and speaking engagements. 
Encourages and leads student-athletes and staff in community service and outreach. 
Demonstrates full knowledge of NIRA and university rules and regulations and cooperates fully with investigations of any potential violations. 

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

Strong verbal and written communication and organizational skills.
Demonstrated ability to recruit, retain, and develop student-athletes.
Knowledge of NIRA and university rules and the ability to apply them consistently.
Ability to serve as a positive role model for students and represent NSU with integrity.
Experience in game strategy, practice planning, statistics, and program promotion.
Capability to manage budgets, coordinate travel, and oversee operational logistics.
Ability to prioritize student-athlete academic success, welfare, and graduation outcomes.
Understanding of and dedication to creating a team culture of discipline, accountability, and inclusion. 

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

Reports to the Director of Athletics or designated leadership assigns work in terms of general instructions. Complete work is spot-checked for completed outcomes, team performance, and compliance with team procedures, and compliance with department and institutional policy.

GUIDELINES

Work is conducted in accordance with the NIRA university and department policies and procedures.
Independent judgement and interpretation are required for daily operations.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

The role requires balancing responsibilities in teaching mentoring, compliance, recruiting, and administration.
The purpose of the Head Coach position is to build a program that supports student athletes’ success.

CONTACTS

Contacts are typically with student athletes, coaching staff, university personnel, alumni, prospective student- athletes and families, medic and the general public.
Contacts are typically to provide services, to give or exchange information, or to resolve problems.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is typically performed includes physical activity, including demonstrations of the desired approaches to rodeo sports. The work requires sitting, standing, bending, reaching, and stooping along with managing rodeo live stock in an arena setting with gates, fencing and other structures. The employee lifts light to heavy objects such as saddles, barrels etc.
The work is typically performed in an office, rodeo arena, or sports classroom while working days, evenings and weekend responsibilities tied to athletics events.
Position is highly safety sensitive.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

This position is responsible for overseeing and managing the rodeo sport activities by interacting with and teaching student athletes in the sport, the public, news media, etc. 
This position has direct supervision over assistant coaches, graduate assistants, student managers, and other support personnel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
Demonstrated knowledge of rodeo and the ability to lead a collegiate-level program
Previous coaching experience, including team planning, operations, and athlete development

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree
Minimum of five years of coaching experience, preferably at the college level
Proven track record of competitive and academic success in prior coaching roles

Annual salary $65,508.00 with excellent benefits, including generous leave time.
