Job Description:

JOB SUMMARY: Saginaw Valley State University, a member of NCAA Division II and Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference invites applications for the position of Head Football Coach to develop, promote and supervise all facets of the Football team; develop and execute strategies for the recruitment of student-athletes for a highly visible regionally and nationally competitive team; organize and direct all aspects of the football program, organizing practice sessions to enhance the team’s performance; supervise staff involved in the program and oversee budget; and provide a “Championship Experience” in the classroom, in competition and in our campus and local communities. The position is a full-time, 12-month benefitted appointment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• The Head Coach is responsible for providing coaching expertise, leadership, management, and administration of all aspects of a competitive NCAA Division II program while overseeing all aspects of the Football program, including administration, instruction, development, and recruitment of student-athletes who meet SVSU’s academic standards.
• Demonstrated knowledge of and adherence to all applicable NCAA and conference compliance rules and regulations.
• Ensure that all relevant institutional, conference, and NCAA rules and regulations are followed, including, but not limited to, student-athlete eligibility, recruiting, financial aid, scheduling, and academic progress. Ensure compliance with all institutional, conference, and NCAA rules and regulations by student-athletes and sport-related staff.
• Abide by NCAA Bylaws 10.1 and 11.1 regarding ethical conduct and the responsibility to positively contribute to a campus culture of NCAA rules compliance.
• Our mission is to provide our student-athletes opportunities to excel in academics, with an emphasis on graduation and leadership development, while having a positive impact on our campus and in our local communities. Monitor academic progress, including study table and class attendance, in coordination with the athletic academic advisor.
• Develop and execute a strategy for building a regionally and nationally competitive program. Prepare, lead, and execute practice and game plans for both championship and non-championship seasons.
• Promote a culture of academic and athletic success and collaborate with the athletic training and strength and conditioning staff.
• Direct and manage the Football program recruiting efforts of high-profile DII prospective student-athletes through phone calls, social media channels, electronic correspondence, scouting, attending games, on-campus and home visits, in accordance with NCAA rules and regulations.
• Prepare, manage, and maximize the allocation of athletic grants in aid.
• Prepare, manage, and maximize program operating budget with established fund-raising goals and sound financial practices. Maintain or develop fundraising strategies through summer camps and/or clinics to supplement the program’s operating budget. Coordinate annual giving, special events, naming opportunities, and/or specific campaigns for the Football program with the Director for Athletic Development.
• Additional responsibilities include developing competitive and practice schedules, practice plans and scouting reports, travel arrangements, facility usage, as well as hiring/supervising staff and ordering equipment/apparel.
• Serve as an ambassador for the Football program and the University’s Athletic Department through community engagement, committee service, public speaking opportunities in the local community, state, and region, and communication through traditional media outlets and social media while connecting with alumni, parents, and friends of the University.
• Cultivate and maintain meaningful relationships with current student-athletes and SVSU Football alums.
• Participate in institutional professional development and training. Serve on committees and attend clinics, conventions, and other meetings to consistently monitor the ever-changing landscape of intercollegiate athletics.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: General supervision is provided by the Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED :

Functional supervision is exercised over assistant coaches

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree.
• Minimum of four years of coaching experience at the junior college, NAIA or NCAA Division I/II/III levels.
• Good organization, oral and written communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Outstanding media/public relations skills.
• Ability to handle and maintain confidential information.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn new software quickly.
• Experience and ability to positively interact with all members of the campus community
• Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Master’s degree preferred.
• Previous Football head coaching or coordinator experience preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Work is performed in a coaching, athletic, competitive indoor/outdoor environment.
• Weeknights and weekends, including intermittent travel, will be required.
• All work associated with this role must be performed within the state of Michigan.
